“Old man,” I tease into his ear.

“Not so old I can’t do this,” he grunts, as he lifts me over his shoulder, fireman style. He strides over to the balcony door and slides it open, stepping out onto our private terrace. A few further steps has us in the hot tub, where he deposits me gently. We both sigh with pleasure as the warm water engulfs our tired bodies.

“Ah, so good.” I stretch my arms and legs, luxuriating in the feel of the warm jets along my aching joints.

Wyatt stretches out beside me with a contented sigh. “That is good,” he drawls.

“Better than sex?”

He pretends to consider for a moment, then, putting thumb and index finger an inch apart, he smirks, “Maybe sex is better by this much.”

“You’ll have to show me. It’s been a long time.”

“Yeah, I know.”

I ask the question that’s been on the back of my mind. “Have you—in all this time—you know, been with someone else?”

He takes so long to speak that I brace myself for the answer. “All the time we were married, Mel, I’ve been faithful. It’s been hard, with the long separation. I have needs, like any other human, but I made a vow to you when we got married, and I’ve kept that vow.”

“And what about since the divorce?”

He lets out a long breath. “A week after the divorce, I let Dylan convince me to go out on a date with this girl he set me up with, Callie.”

I watch his face intently, my heart sinking.

“So, we went out, had a nice meal—normal, ordinary stuff.”

“And?”

“She was nice. Pretty. Intelligent. Kind. We had an enjoyable evening. She seemed to like me, which was good for my ego.”

“Wyatt, you’re killing me. Just spit it out.”

He huffs. “That’s what I’m trying to do. It’s not easy to talk about this with you.” He sighs. “At the end of the evening, I saw her back home and we kissed. I—enjoyed the kiss. She was pretty. She felt good, smelled good, tasted good, and I’m made of flesh and blood. So yes, I kissed a girl and I liked it.”

“Don’t sugarcoat it,” I say sarcastically.

He gives me a pained look. “I’m trying to be honest. So, we kissed and it got a little heated. My cock was definitely on board to take things further, but I stopped. I just wasn’t ready to take that big step. For over two decades Mel, there’s only been one woman in my life and my bed. It didn’t feel right to be with someone else. So I bid her goodnight, did the gentlemanly thing and left.”

“Did you ever see her again?”

He lays his head back against the edge of the tub and closes his eyes. “Next day, I was about to message her and ask for a second date. Then the newscast came on with footage of your first contact with the Venorians and everything got forgotten for a while. I got swamped with calls, remember? And then you called and we ended up naked, having remote sex. I thought all that would end with the divorce, yet here we were at it again. You were so gorgeous as you came, and I realized no other woman, no matter how pretty, holds a candle to you. That piece of paper that says we’re divorced can’t speak for what’s between us. I’ll always love you Mel. You’re it for me.”

I swallow the lump in my throat as he continues. “I figured, if there’s even the smallest chance that we could be together again, then I wouldn’t ruin it by sleeping with someone else. So, my hand’s been kept busy, trying to ease my long suffering cock. I’m yours Mel. The question is, after all this time, are you mine?”

“There’s been no one else, only you.”

“I sense a but.”

“But the problems that broke us up are still here.”

“You want to go to Ven,” he states flatly.

“I want to go to Ven. I want more than the conventional, nine-to-five lifestyle you seem to crave.”

“What if you don’t get the Ven ambassadorship?”

“Then I’ll keep trying for something else, maybe Krovatia or Driskia. In any case, do you really want to predicate our getting back together on my career disappointment?”
