When you put us all together in our outfits, we are going to be fabulous!

“You best be glad I like your ass, heffa!”

I snort out a laugh as Brenna comes into the living room, glaring at me. “It’s for the kids, so hush. I bought you that fancy panty set and a cami to wear under it so it's comfy. Just think, boy wonder will be more than happy to unwrap you later.”

“You going back to Noah’s tonight?”

I turn and shake my head. “No, we’ll be coming back here. If y’all get freaky and we get freaky, it is what it is. We’re all adults. Just keep it in your room.” I smirk.

“Or the patio, eh, babe?”

I make a face at Abel. “I will cut it off and feed the fish if you mess up our new furniture out there. If you stain it, I’ll beat you with it.”

“So violent,” I hear from behind me. I turn to see Noah there, his Santa suit on except the jacket.

“Oh well, hello, Santa.” He has on a tight white T-shirt, and those pants don’t do much for covering up what he is working with, if you know what I mean. He is definitely a tall drink of water. I am suddenly parched.

“Don’t look at me like that or we will be late.”

“Jesus,” I laugh nervously as I fan my face. The man is just too damn hot for his own good.

“The rest of Hippie’s get-up can be put on when we get there. I’ve talked to the nurses; they have the volunteers and candy stripers setting up the big waiting room for us to use. The kids who can’t get out of their rooms for whatever reason, we will be able to go see them and hand out the presents that way.”

“We ready?” Noah asks everyone.

A chorus of “yes” fills the room. We head out to the vehicles. My nervousness grows as we pull out of the driveway. I want this night to be absolutely perfect for the kids. God knows they’ve been through so much already. If we can do anything to give them the slightest bit of joy, we will have made a difference in some way.

It’s all about giving back and showing them that people, other than their family, do care about them.

I stand back just watchingBrenna, Abel, and Noah interact with these kids. It’s melting my heart fully. I’m a big sap on a good day; tonight though, I’m hanging on by a very small thread.

We’ve been around to the rooms of the kids not able to come in here, and let me just tell you, these kids are freaking amazing. Their ages range from one to seventeen. Their faces light up seeing Noah come in, with his big sack over his shoulder. Able has one that is just as big, full of wrapped gifts.

As Noah starts calling kids up to where he sits, you can see their whole demeanor change. Hearing their names, seeing the gifts, it has been a little too much for a couple of the kids. They’d sit crying, overwhelmed and not knowing how to process the sudden surges of emotion. I feel their emotional rollercoaster, I am riding it right along with them.

Watching them struggle hurt. But I am determined to make it better for them. I take Hippie over to where they sit and kneel on the floor. We talk for a good bit of time, letting them get it out. A few of the parents and a nurse, or three, had to step out of the room and collect themselves too. It’s a lot happening at once.

Some of these precious kids are so strong, fighting things like leukemia, auto immune diseases, and other disabilities. They are fighters. Each one of them reminds me that life is too short to worry about the little things. Fighting to survive is just in our blood. If we won’t fight for ourselves, then who will?

The older kids sit on the floor with the younger kids, helping them open their own toys. Chattering on about what they get, and a few have even set up a racetrack on the floor for the boys to let them race. Kids are really the greatest creations of all time.

“Penny for your thoughts.”

I look up to see Brenna coming my way, a huge smile on her face. I quickly wipe a stray tear away and open my arms, hugging my best friend to me.

“This has made me so damn happy.”

“Yeah, same. The boys are having a good time too.”

“We may have to peel Abel away from the cars. He’s been down there playing since they put those cars on the carpet.” I laugh softly.

“Yeah, my man is a big kid.”

“Aren’t we all though?”

“Sometimes.” She leans up and kisses my cheek. “Love you, bestie.”

“I love you, too.”
