“You okay?” she asks, concern in her voice.

“Yeah, but…can I tell you something?”

“Duh, heffa. Anything, you know that.”

I make sure no one is close by to overhear me. Resting my head against hers, I sigh. “I want to have a baby. I wasn’t sure at first, but…the feeling is growing in my heart. I want Noah’s baby. I don’t even know if he wants kids. We’ve not talked about it. What if I suck as a parent? I can’t even keep you and Abel out of trouble…”

Her laughter makes me smile. “You’d make a great mom. Abel and I aside. We aren’t to be controlled by anyone. We’re free spirits.” She looks over at the big goofball on the floor making the little ones laugh. “You should talk to Noah about it.”

“Yeah, I will. If he is game, I will go ahead and get off my birth control and see what fate has in play for us.”

“Triplets,” Brenna says, looking up at me.

“I will sew your snatch shut. Don’t you dare jinx me with that. Good god.” I push her away, laughing.

“Okay, twins then. Two for one and then you can be done.” I squint my eyes and shrug. “Okay, that may not be so bad, least we wouldn’t be outnumbered.”

We make our way over to where our fellas are. I sit beside Noah, smiling down at the little girl on his knee. She is chattering on about her new Barbie doll. Those pesky tears start to sting my eyes again.

“You sads?” I jerk when she touches my cheek.

“Oh no, sweetheart. I’m so very happy.”

“You crying.”

“They’re happy tears. Seeing you and the others playing and smiling makes my heart so happy, I can’t contain it.”

“Oh…I likes my Bawbie dolls. Her so pretty.”

“So are you,” I say, booping her on the nose. She starts to giggle then. I can see her mother watching her. She too has tears in her eyes. “You go over and get your stocking and show it to your mama. There may be some extra surprises in there for you.”

“Okays!”

Noah helps her down, and once she is steady, she walks over to her mom. His arm goes around me, pulling us closer together.

“I love you, so much.”

I turn to see him smiling. “I love you, more than I could ever put into words. I hope you know that. You’ve been the best thing to happen to me in so long. I couldn’t do any of this without you in my corner. Well, you and Brenna.”

“You can always count on me to be here. In the time that we’ve known each other, I’ve learned so much. I’ve always had Abel to look after, and I love my brother dearly, but I was missing a part of me. I found that when I found you. It was love at first sight. You outside of that bar. Then watching you and Brenna having your knockdown, drag-out competition for tickets at the arcade.” He chuckles. “I knew then that I would move heaven and earth for you.”

As if I’m not already an emotional mess here. Those words, man, I’m a goner. His mouth comes down on mine. I am reminded of where we are when kids start to make fake kissing sounds and giggling. I pull back from Noah, my face burning with a blush.

“Girls have cooties!” one little boy says.

“Yeah, sometimes they do, little man, but when you find the right one for you, those cooties go away.” Noah chuckles.

Be still my heart, he is such a dork. A very hot dork though. I mean, rawr. I can’t wait to get him home and slowly peel him out of his suit.

Chapter9

Brenna

I'm wide awake at 4am and curse myself. Abel and I are going to pick up Elsie this morning, and I can't wait. It's been a few months since I've seen her, and I'm having some major withdrawals. No doubt in my mind, it's probably the reason I can't sleep.

Shuffling out to the kitchen for some much needed caffeine, I see Mara sitting with a cup of coffee at the kitchen table.

"Well, here I thought I was the only freak awake at 4am. Good morning, my little ray of sunshine."
