“Alexandria, the plane is being fueled up as we speak. I have no idea where you are, so if you’re far from the airport, you should pack and leave now. I can arrange another plane to drop off yourfriendin Kleinland or wherever she’d like to go.”

“Her name is Dr.Bexley Woods. And don’t use that tone when you’re calling her my friend, Mother.”

“Alex?” Bexley said softly, likely hearing her own name.

“Mum, I have to go.”

“The plane is–”

“I know. I’ll see you later,” she said, hanging up the phone.

Bexley lifted her head, and tired eyes looked down at Alex.

“Is it over?”

“Iswhatover?” Alex asked, running a hand through Bexley’s hair.

“Our private weekend.”

“Unfortunately, yes. But just this weekend. We’ll have more like this, Bex.”

“What happened?”

“It’s official portrait time again. My father moved up the date with the photographer, and my mother has the plane gassed up and ready to go.”

“Oh,” Bexley uttered, looking disappointed. “So, you have to go back?”

“I’ll just give her this and come back to Kleinland.” Alex smiled up at her.

“She’s going to shit a brick when she sees your hair.” Bexley laughed and ran her hand through it. “Is she going to have me murdered?”

Alex laughed and said, “Oh, shit. My new haircut will be in these pictures.”

“Yes, she’s going to have me murdered,” Bexley concluded.

Alex rolled them over until she was on top and said, “You could come with me.” She kissed Bexley’s forehead. “I know you have the students and patients, but you could maybe take a little time off.”

“Alex, I don’t think I can meet your whole family right now. I mean, we just…”

“No, I understand,” Alex said, kissing her nose. “I just thought it might be nice for them to meet you and for you to spend some time with them. My mother is annoying and frustrating, but my father is great, and my brother and sister-in-law are good people. My nephews are the best.”

“Babe…”

“I know. I’m just a little excited, I suppose,” Alex replied as Bexley ran her hands through her hair.

“I’ll have the plane take you back to Kleinland. I can take the train back to London.”

“It’syourplane,” Bexley said.

“Train ride is longer,” Alex told her. “It’ll make my mother furious, which will give me a little revenge on her for ruining the rest of my weekend.’

Bexley laughed and said, “I don’t want to be away from you.”

“Come with me,” Alex repeated against Bexley’s lips. “We can still take the train if you want, and you can spend the time working and adjusting the plan for the week.”

“I shouldn’t.”

“Do you want to come with me?”
