“Someone in Wales.”

“Mother,I’mhere, too,” Larry spoke.

“Yes, I know. Hello, Margaret.”

“Hello, Mother,” Margaret greeted.

“What onearthare you wearing?” the woman asked Alex.

“Clothes.”

“You need a dress.”

“No, I don’t.”

“Alexandria, you either wear a dress, or you wear your military uniform for formal portraits.”

“Well, today, I’m wearing this,” she stated.

“What has gotten into you? First, the haircut, and then the–”

Bexley swallowed when she realized why the Queen had stopped talking.

“Mother, I’d like to introduce you to my girlfriend, Dr.Bexley Woods,” Alex said.

“Your–” Alex’s mother paused again. “I’m sorry; yourgirlfriend?”

“Mother,” Alex warned. “Watch it.”

Alex’s hand took Bexley’s, and Bexley forced herself to move next to her.

“Your Majesty,” she greeted with a terrible attempt at a curtsy.

“Hello,” the woman replied, looking Bexley up and down. “I wasn’t aware you’d be joining us.”

“I invited her,” Alex explained.

“Not to be in the photos, of course.”

“No, of course not,” Alex replied. “She’s my guest. I wasn’t prepared to have to end my trip early, and I wasn’t going to leave Bexley in Wales or make her fly back to Kleinland without me when she wanted to come here.”

The Queen seemed surprised by that and said, “I see. Will you be staying with us tonight as well?”

“She’ll be staying withme, Mother,” Alex told her.

“She can’t stay with you. People know you’re back in the city. They’ll know you’ll be at home. If they–”

“Mother, let’s just go take the pictures.” Alex sighed. “We’re exhausted. You sprung this on me literally last minute, and I’d like to get them over with so I can take Bexley home.”

The Queen looked Bexley over one more time.

“Very well. I don’t like to keep your father waiting anyway.”

Bexley had survived the initial meeting. She wasn’t sure it had gone well, but she also hadn’t peed her pants, so for her, it was a victory. The whole family left her in the room by herself, with a guard stationed at the door. Alex had made sure she had something to drink and some snacks, but then she’d had to go. Bexley had worked on the plans for her students for the rest of the week, not knowing whether she’d be back or not. She didn’t want to let anyone in Kleinland down, but she also wasn’t ready to be without Alex. She knew that soon enough, Alex would be here, and she would be back in Kansas. They hadn’t talked about that yet, but it would mean a lot of time apart, and she wasn’t ready to start that now.

“Dr.Woods,” someone said from behind her.
