She turned around and saw the Queen herself standing in the open doorway. Bexley stood up instantly.

“Your Majesty,” she said quickly.

The Queen walked over as the guard closed the door behind her. Bexley remained standing. She didn’t know what to do now. She looked at the door, hoping Alex was just a few steps behind.

“She’ll be here shortly. She’s taking photos with her father right now. In the family, we call these the next-in-line photos. If she had children, they’d be there, too.”

“Okay. Thank you,” Bexley said, swallowing.

“May I have a moment of your time while you’re waiting?”

“Of course,” she replied, feeling her heart drop into her stomach.

“Let’s sit. Shall we?”

Bexley waited for the woman to sit on the couch. Then, she joined her, leaving plenty of space between them.

“Alexandria tells me you’re her new girlfriend.”

“Yes, Ma’am,” Bexley said.

“And that you’re the reason she’s been gallivanting from country to country.”

“Oh, I–”

“She has responsibilities here, Bexley. She should be at home, learning from her father.”

“I–”

“Are you prepared to move here full-time?”

“Sorry?”

“Live here? In London?” the Queen added.

“I don’t–”

“Bexley, are you prepared for the press? They’re a nuisance, but they’re part of life, if you and my daughter remain a couple.”

“I know. We–”

“Do you want children one day, Bexley?”

“Yes.”

“One daysoon? It seems you’ve put your career first over starting a family.”

“I got my doctorate, yes, but I–”

“Truthfully, as a Consort, I can tell you that you must have a certain way about yourself to make this work. If you’re only interested in being a Princess or joining the royal family, it doesn’t usually work out. You have to want to put the work in. Are you–”

“Hold on,” Bexley said. “Just… hold on.” She held up her hands. “I’ve let you talk all over me since you got into the room because I’m trying to be respectful. You’re Alex’s mother, and you’re a Queen, but I won’t let you talk like I’m only interested in Alex because I want something from her. I don’t want anythingfromher. I just wanther. So, please try to–”

“What’s going on?” Alex asked, walking briskly into the room.

“Is your father done?” the Queen addressed Alex, standing up.

“Yes, he sent me to find you. What’s going on?” she asked again.
