“No,” Bexley replied. She then waited for Alex to push her chair in and said, “Thank you.”

Alex winked at her and sat down next to her.

“I wanted to talk to him about what I did in Kleinland and see if there’s something to be accomplished here.”

“You did?” Alex asked, surprised.

“It was one meeting, but I think we could emulate the program, and I could be a part of it here one day,” Bexley replied. “I’ve never been able to decide on research or clinical practice – I love them both. And I think I can do that here, but like I said, it was only one meeting.”

Alex looked over at her father, who lifted his water glass in her direction and gave her a fatherly wink.

CHAPTER 40

Bexley watched as Alice and Nora sat the twins in their playpen in the middle of Alex’s house. It was a strange sight but one she also found comforting. Her best friend and her wife were in London for a visit with the King and a few other foreign dignitaries. Since they’d be busy, Bexley and Alex had offered to watch the kids for them. On top of that, Lawrence and Margaret had been asked to go to Australia on behalf of the family to award an activist with a medal for service to the Commonwealth, and Alex had volunteered to watch the boys for the day, giving them a full house.

“So, Larry and Margaret will be back tomorrow?” Alice asked.

“Yes. The nanny has had them for the past few days, but Alex said we’d give her the day off and take care of the boys until this evening,” Bexley replied.

“So, the two of you are going to handle my kidsplustwo little boys?” Alice checked, sitting next to Bexley on Alex’s sofa.

“There’s two of us. And yours aren’t even walking yet.”

“They do, however, cry,” Alice said.

“They’ve been good lately,” Nora added, sitting on Alice’s other side.

“So, they’re likely about to blow?” Alex asked, walking downstairs.

“It’s possible. But they’re fed and should nap for a while. They sleep a lot when we travel,” Nora explained.

“That’s good news because Henry and Louis are on their way,” Alex replied, walking over to Bexley. She then leaned down, kissed Bexley on the top of her head, and asked, “Are you sure about this? I can ask the nanny to keep them, after all.”

“You love your nephews,” Bexley said, looking up at her. “It’s a warm day. Maybe you could take them outside, let them scream and run out all their energy, and they’ll pass out before dinner.”

“We can hope,” Alex offered in response and then turned to Alice and Nora. “So, you two are meeting with Father today?”

“Among others,” Alice said. “We want to entertain the idea of hosting a whole monarchies-of-the-world meeting of the minds in Kleinland.”

“Meeting of the minds?” Alex asked, sitting on the armrest of the sofa next to Bexley, who leaned into her.

“Monarchies are a dying breed, but they do serve their purposes. Every country that has one does things a little differently, so we thought that if we all got together, we might be able to borrow ideas from each another and work to improve perceptions and help more people,” Alice explained. “It was Nora’s idea.” She smiled proudly.

“It’s what we do in the military. We meet with ally countries to work together on strategies for battle, but also strategies to help people in times of crisis.”

“It’s a good idea,” Alex replied. “You’re hoping Kleinland gets to be the home base for operations?”

“That’s the plan. We know we don’t exactly have the best reputation, but things have been quiet since before Alice and I got married. The violent opposition is either in prison or dead, and while a few of the former President’s supporters are still floating around, they’ve stayed out of the way.”

“I think they know their time is over,” Alice offered.

“Shouldn’tyoube there?” Bexley asked, looking up at Alex.

“In Kleinland?”

“Well, yeah. But I meant the meeting today.”

“It’s just a sovereign thing,” Alex replied. “But I’m hoping I’ll get an invite to the real party in Kleinland, being that I will be the one to carry one particular monarchy into the future.”
