CHAPTER 41

“Idon’t want you there without me when this goes public,” Alex told her. “We need to be together.”

“Babe, I’m in Kansas. You’re in London. People are already talking,” Bexley replied.

“We don’t have to confirm anything until you’re back here for your visit,” Alex countered.

“That’s not until next month,” Bexley replied. “Babe, reporters have started showing up outside my house. Three of them were out there this morning. I left out the back door and went to my grandma’s house. It’s for sale, so I don’t think they know about it yet.”

Alex still didn’t know how news of their relationship had broken, but two months after Bexley had returned to Kansas, there had been the whiff of a story in a tabloid that Alex was off the market. That had been picked up by a reputable paper with an unnamed source. For all Alex knew, it was someone who’d overheard her talking to Teresa or her mother at a party. Teresa had sworn it wasn’t her, and Alex believed her. Teresa had no reason to be the source. It would only hurt her in the eyes of the family and get her uninvited from every event, among other things. Alex had hated that she was in London while Bexley was dealing with this alone, so she’d hopped on the plane.

“I know,” Alex said.

“Know what?”

“I asked security where you were since you weren’t at home or at work.”

“Alex, I’m okay. They’re keeping me safe.”

“I know. Can you open the door, though, sweetheart? It’s only a matter of time before a news van drives past and sees me.”

“You’re here?!” Bexley said in a high-pitched tone.

“Open the door, love.”

The door opened a second later, and Bexley’s arms were around her neck in an instant. Alex picked her up off the ground, carrying Bexley back inside the house.

“Stay outside,” she told her security.

“Ma’am, we should–”

“Outside,” she repeated. “Make sure they don’t gather out there if they find us here.”

“Baby,” Bexley murmured, kissing Alex all over her face. “What are you doing here?”

Alex put Bexley back on her feet and kissed her lips quickly.

“If we confirm this, Bex, we’ll need to go.”

“Gogo?” Bexley asked.

“I can’t just leave you here. They won’t leave you alone. We don’t have to confirm. We can let people think what they want, but… I don’t know. I hate being at home without you. I hate that we only get to see one another once a month if we’re lucky.”

“I know,” Bexley said. “I hate it, too.”

“It’s not how I pictured asking you to move in with me officially, but–”

“I have an offer on my house,” Bexley interrupted.

“What?” Alex asked.

“Technically, I haven’t put it up for sale yet, but I have a friend at the center who was looking for a place. This house is only a one-bedroom,” Bexley said of her grandmother’s former house. “And she needed a two-bedroom, so I mentioned that I might be putting my place on the market soon.”

“You did, did you?”

Bexley smiled and said, “I wasn’t planning on doing itthissoon, but she and her husband made an offer. I already called an agent, and we’re working through the details. I thought I could sell to them and just move in here for a while, since this place has been a harder sell, but…”

“But?” Alex asked, hopeful.
