Bexley thought about it for a second. She could ask Alex not to audittoday, at least. It was the first day of the program, and Bexley needed to find her stride, really, before she had outsiders observing her. She was already nervous about the students arriving soon. She’d handpicked them, but that was based on their application and performance in their undergraduate programs. It wasn’t necessarily indicative of their future results, and this might not even be the career they want at the end of the program. Bexley wasn’t worried about all that, though. She was more concerned about her own ability to teach them.

“Bex, you have a staff of people you manage back home, right?” Alex asked, walking to the front of the room.

“It’s not the same thing.”

“Don’t you have to teach your new people or trainees?”

“Yes, but they’ve earned their graduate degrees and have clinical experience. These kids don’t have either of those things.”

“And you’re going to give that to them,” Alex replied, placing her hand on Bexley’s upper arm, rubbing it slightly. “That’s amazing, Bex. You remember what it was like when you were new to all of this, don’t you?”

“Yes.”

“And you’ve planned a solid curriculum that’s appropriate for their level?”

“Yes.”

“Then, I’ll leave you alone today. It was probably wrong of me to come on the first day. Sometimes, when I’ve been out of the chaos for a bit, I forget about it. I hadn’t thought that I might be a distraction for you. Honestly, I wanted to see you in action.” Alex smiled. “You’re great at what you do.”

“I can share the curriculum and the plans with you, and you can send it to whomever you’d have run this thing back in the UK.”

“I was sort of hoping you’d run it,” Alex said, smiling still.

“Me?” she asked, surprised.

“Why not?”

“I have a job back home, Alex. I took a few months off to come here, but–”

“What’s a few more months, really?” Alex asked.

The sound of the whirring began.

“They’re here,” Bexley stated.

“I’ll go,” Alex replied, dropping her hand from Bexley’s arm.

“No, you should stay,” Bexley requested. “You helped me build this. You should get to see it in action on its first day. I’m just nervous.”

“Are you certain?” Alex checked.

“I’m sure, yeah. Can you just maybe hide in one of the offices, though? I’ll introduce you once they’re all settled.”

“You want me to hide in an office?” Alex asked.

The elevator doors opened.

“Alex!”

“Okay. Okay. Better than a closet, I suppose,” she said, laughing.

Alex quickly took off to the closest office and closed the door behind her. Bexley felt like an idiot. She’d just made an actual Princess run and hide.

“Hello. Welcome,” she greeted the three people who emerged from the elevator.

“So, the idea with this program is that you will get classroom time and clinical experience. We have a list of patients who have requested to be part of the program, and they understand that you are students, but you won’t ever be alone with a patient. I will be involved in all consultations as a precaution. In order to do this, we will split up at times, and some of you will have exercises to do out here. Some will be reviewing articles to later present findings. We will have no more than two of you in the room with a patient at a time, and that will only be the adults. For our underage patients, it will be one of you, me, and, of course, their parent or guardian,” Bexley explained. “By the time you leave here, my hope is that you have enough information to determine if this is the career path you’d like to take. And you all know about the possibility of scholarships for top performers.” She watched them take notes and nod. “Now, before we begin to get into the content for today, I wanted to let you know one more thing. We will have guests audit from time to time. This is a program sponsored by the Queens of Kleinland, so there is a good chance they will make an appearance, but beyond that, we have a guest today that I’m sure you all know. She is here because she’s interested in learning more about what we do here, so she will be sitting in for the rest of the day. I would ask you all to make sure to conduct yourselves professionally and not to let any of our potential guests distract you from your purpose here.” Bexley turned her head toward the office Alex had been hiding in for the past twenty minutes. “Your Royal Highness,” she said.
