“I think so,” Bexley said as she caught the eye of the flight attendant again, who gave her a soft, almost knowing smile.

CHAPTER 15

“Welcome, Bexley,” Elizabeth said, pulling Bexley into a hug.

“Thank you for having me, Your Majesty.”

“I tell her every time. She doesn’t listen,” Alice said from Bexley’s right.

“And I finally got her to call me Alex all the time,” Alex added.

“It’s Elizabeth, Bexley,” Elizabeth told her.

“It’s all still weird to me. Sorry,” Bexley replied, looking over at Alex.

“Palmer will be along shortly,” Elizabeth said. “Sorry, we have to stay here tonight, but I promise, we’ll head for the springs first thing tomorrow. We have a dinner in the city tonight we couldn’t get out of.”

“I can show you around,” Alex said to Bexley. “Give you the palace tour.”

“Youdoknow the place well,” Elizabeth noted.

“Nora and I are going to that dinner with Elizabeth and Palmer. Will you be okay on your own tonight?” Alice asked Bexley.

“You’renot going?” Bexley turned to Alex.

“No, I wasn’t invited. I’m not a Queen, remember?”

“Her father will be there,” Elizabeth explained.

“And you’ve been sworn to secrecy,” Alex said to her. “I don’t want my parents to know I’m here. They’ll put me to work, and I’m here for fun this weekend.”

“Youdorealize they can easily track your plane?” Alice spoke.

“They won’t,” Alex said. “So, tour?” She placed her hand on the small of Bexley’s back.

“Um, okay.”

Alex walked them up the center staircase to the second story of the palace.

“So, what do you know about St.Rais?”

“I bought a book on it at the airport before one of my first flights to Kleinland, so I’m pretty well-versed.”

“Well, I’ll skip the history then, and we’ll go straight to rooms.” Alex motioned for them to walk down the hall. “I usually stay in the one at the end of this wing when I’m here.”

“How often are you here?”

“Often. Elizabeth is a not-so-distant cousin. Technically, I’m also related to most of the European royalty.”

“Alice?” Bexley asked.

“Very distant.”

“Oh, my God! You had a crush on your cousin?” Bexley laughed.

“She’s not my cousin. Well, not my first or–”

“Alex!” Bexley continued laughing. “Gross.” She shoved Alex playfully.
