“It was totally innocent.”

“No way it was innocent. How many times did you fantasize about having sex with my best friend?”

“No times. Zero times.” Alex waved her hands back and forth in front of her face. “I told you – it really was just a crush. Besides, I could tell Nora was into her right away back then, and even when there were fifty people in a room, your best friend always tried to find Nora in the crowd. I knew what that meant.”

“Yeah, me too,” Bexley admitted.

“Alice told me something a while ago.”

“About?”

“Were you…”

“In love with her?” Bexley said as they walked. “Yeah, for a long time.”

“And you never told her?”

“Not until after she met Nora, so my chances were zero percent.”

Alex nodded and asked, “How didthatgo?”

“Not well, at first, but we’ve gotten past it. I met Holly, and I was in love with her. She wasn’t just someone I needed to get over Alice.”

“Right,” Alex said. “Here’s your room. I asked them to put you in the one next to mine.”

“Oh, okay. Thanks,” Bexley replied.

“Since everyone else is going to the dinner thing, do you want to maybe have dinner with me here later? I can have something brought in for us. St.Rais pizza is actually amazing.”

Bexley chuckled and said, “Sure. Why not?” When Alex opened the door to Bexley’s room for her, Bexley added, “My stuff’s already here?”

“Palace staff are usually very efficient.”

“I don’t need a staff. I just need a shower with good water pressure, a coffee maker that works well, and a comfortable bed with fluffy pillows.”

“So, no butler for you back home, then?”

“No, I don’t even have a housekeeper,” Bexley said, walking into the room. “But this is very nice. I’m going to get spoiled, and then I’ll have to go home to my tiny house.”

“That’s months from now, though.”

“Actually, I’m going back to check on my grandmother and move her into the assisted living facility.”

“You’re leaving?” Alex’s heart raced.

“I’ll be back. It’s just for a few days. I’d invite you to hang out with me there, but–”

“Yes,” Alex said a little too quickly.

“What?”

“Yes, I’d like to go.” Alex swallowed and then took a deep breath.

“I’m going to Kansas, Alex.”

“I know.”

“I don’t have a palace, and we have, like, one hotel nearby. It’s a very small town.”
