“Ma’am, we should go,” the security guard that had been standing by the door said.

“We have to beat the crowd,” Alex explained.

“Makes sense,” Bexley replied.

They made their way with security down a private staircase and into the waiting car.

“Hey, I’m going to call my grandma when we get home, but I promised Stan I’d go to his bar tonight since he’s working.”

“That sounds like fun,” Alex said.

“Yeah. I won’t stay long, and you can make yourself at home.”

Alex looked at her quizzically and asked, “I’m not invited?”

“There’s no plexiglass box at his bar, Alex. It’s just a lot of people and a lot of possibilities for you to be recognized or for something to happen to you.”

“I have a new hat,” Alex told her, pointing at the hat.

Bexley laughed and said, “You can’t wear that to a bar.”

“Do you have a hat I can borrow? What I’ve found out is that most of the time, because people don’t expect me to be somewhere, they often just assume Ilook likeme. It has gotten me out of some sticky situations in the past. If you need a night with your friend, I’m happy to stay home and wait for you, but I can make sure I go unrecognized and that I’m safe, Bexley.”

“Are you sure? It’s a gay bar, Alex.”

“I’m gay,” Alex said.

“No, I know that. I just mean that if you do get spotted there–”

“You letmeworry about that, okay?”

“Okay. I’ll call Stan and let him know, though. He can get us a table in the back or something to make it less likely you’ll be seen.”

“Great. Now, back to this hat. Can I really not pull it off?”

“Alex, you look adorable in that hat, but it’s an amateur hockey team.”

“So? They won three to two. I say I wear the hat to help promote a good team,” Alex said.

Bexley laughed and slid a little closer to Alex on the seat.

“Fine, but you’re not wearing the jersey.”

CHAPTER 20

“I’d say I’ve never had royalty in my bar, but Alice has been here,” Stan said. “Still, it’s nice to see you again.”

“Thank you, Stan,” Alex replied as she sat down next to Bexley in the booth.

Stan looked at Bexley and gave her an expression that told her he was reading something into the fact that Alex sat next to her instead of across from her. When Alex’s arm went over the back of the booth, Stan’s eyes went wide.

“Are you joining us?” Alex asked him.

“Just for a few minutes. We’re getting busy, but I’ll come back when we die down to check on you.” He sat down across from them. “So, how has your trip to Kansas been so far?”

“It’s been great,” Alex said.

Bexley watched Alex turn that ridiculous hat to the back, so she quickly looked around the very packed bar, then took the hat off Alex’s head, turned it back around, and put it back over her eyes.
