“Hey, Bexley. Where have you been?”

“Out of town,” she replied, reaching out to lower Alex’s hat over her eyes more. “How haveyoubeen?”

“Oh, you know. Tips are good. I’m almost done with grad school.” He sat the drinks on the table in front of them. “Who’s your friend?”

“This is Alex. She’s in town from… Utah,” she lied. “It’s her first time at a gay bar.” Why had she said that?“She’s Mormon. Well, she was raised Mormon. She’s not out yet. She’s–”

“Going to the bathroom,” Alex said in a perfectly clear, very British accent. “Hello, Tyrell.” She looked up at him. “It’s nice to meet you. I’ll be right back.”

“Alex…”

“I have security, Bexley. I don’t need you to… Never mind. I’ll be right back.” Alex stood and walked toward the bathroom.

“She has security?” Tyrell asked, looking confused.

“Sorry about that. Long story. Mormon thing. Do you think you could give us a few minutes alone?”

“Of course,” he replied. “I have to get back anyway. It was good to see you.”

“You too,” she said, giving him a forced smile.

Once she watched Alex walk into the bathroom, followed by one of her undercover security guards, Bexley motioned for Stan to walk over.

“Hey, it’s busy. What’s up?”

“Stan, I fucked up.”

“What happened?” He sat down next to her.

“I think she’s mad at me.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want anyone to recognize her. It might not be safe. You remember what it was like when the press showed up because they found Alice…”

“Yes. But as far as I know, Alex isn’t in any danger. It would just be inconvenient to have the press all over her.”

“I just want her to be able to enjoy herself here.”

“And she says she is,” Stan pointed out.

“She told me she has security; she doesn’t need me to worry about it.”

“Well, shedoeshave, like, fifteen people here. I met a few of them earlier. They got here before you did and checked the place out. They seem like they’ve got it under control, Bex. Why don’tyoujust think about having a good time?”

“I like her, Stanley.”

“I know.” He shrugged.

“No, I mean… I think Ireallylike her.”

“That’s obvious,” he said.

“Shit. It is? Doessheknow?”

“It’s obvious to me,” Stan replied. “I’ve known you a million years, and I’ve seen you in and out of love, Bex. You’re really into her, aren’t you?”

“I don’t know. She’s just…” Bexley looked over and spotted her coming out of the bathroom. “Shit. She’s coming this way.”
