“Okay. Be cool. She can’t actually hear us,” Stan said. “What are you going to do?”

Bexley watched as a woman approached Alex and said, “Oh, no.”

Two security guards stood off to the side dressed as regular bar patrons. Alex smiled and said something to the woman.

“They’re talking. What are they talking about?”

“You could go over there and check,” he replied.

“I can’t go over there. She’s already mad at me for hovering.”

“She loved when you did that thing with the hat, by the way.”

“What?” Bexley asked, looking at him.

“She was all smiles, Bex. I bet if you asked her to dance, she’d say yes.”

“I can’t ask her to dance. She’s a fucking Princess, and we’re in a bar.”

“So?”

“The woman is handing her a napkin, Stanley. Why is she handing her a napkin?”

“My guess is that the Princess doesn’t want to give out her phone number, but the woman isn’t taking no for an answer and is giving Alexhernumber instead. You see, before cellular telephones, dear Bexley, people used to exchange numbers on napkins at bars.”

“Shut up,” Bexley said. “She’s really giving Alex her number?”

“Bexley?”

“Oh, shit,” Stan said. “Hi, Holly.”

“Holly, hey.” Bexley looked up at her ex-girlfriend. “What are you doing here?”

“There aren’t a lot of gay bar options in town,” Holly replied.

“Hey, I take offense to that.”

“Sorry, Stan. I didn’t mean it that way,” Holly told him.

“No problem,” Stan replied, standing up. “Sorry, I can’t do the dyke drama,” he whispered to Bexley. “I’ve got to get back to the bar. Can I send something over for you, Holly?”

Bexley gave him a scowl.

“No, I’ve got a drink.” She held up what Bexley guessed was a gin and tonic.

Stan left them alone, and Bexley looked over at Alex, who was still talking to the woman. The napkin was nowhere in sight now. Had Alex put it in her pocket? On top of that, Alex’s hat had been twisted to the back, so if anyone got close enough and at all followed the royal family, they’d recognize her immediately.

“Bex?”

“Huh?”

Holly had sat down in front of her, and Bexley hadn’t even noticed.

“How long have you been back?”

“Just since yesterday,” Bexley said.

“And I don’t even warrant a phone call?”
