“I mean, are you, like, in the kitchen, preparing after-sex snacks, and she’s lying in your bed naked, waiting for you to return?”
“What? No,” Bexley said. “She’s standing outside on my patio in the freezing weather because she thinks better in the cold.”
“So, you two didn’t have sex?”
“No, Stan,” she said.
“And you’re mad about that?”
“I’m not mad we didn’t have sex.”
“Whatareyou mad about?”
“I’m notmadabout anything,” she replied a little louder than she’d intended.
“Your tone says otherwise.”
“Well, I’m mad atyounow.”
“What didIdo?” Stan asked.
“Nothing. You didn’t do anything. I’m sorry.”
“Why are you talking to me when there’s a beautiful Princess standing outside, telling you she wants you?”
“Because I’m stupid,” she said.
“You’re not stupid. You’re actually very, very smart. So, what’s up?”
“She doesn’t mean what she’s saying. We’ve just been spending a lot of time together, and–”
“And have you thought aboutwhyyou’ve been spending a lot of time together?”
“She’s auditing the program.”
“She didn’t need to come here and help you take care of Grandma to audit the program. She likes you, Bex.”
“She’s way out of my league, Stan.”
“No one is out of your league,” Stan replied.
“She’s going to be the Queen of a country one day.”
“AliceisQueen, and you loved her.”
“I loved her before I knew anything about her being a Queen. You know that.”
“Did you suddenly think she was out of your league when you found out?”
“No, she was always my straight best friend. It was more about that than anything else.”
“Look, Bexley, there’s a woman in your house who told you she wants you. People don’t just say that unless it’s true. I don’t know whether she meant it like she wants you tonight or she wants you forever, but you should talk to her.”
“I just tried. She told me she needed to be alone.”
“Then, give her the time,” he said. “But you just told me tonight that you liked her, too. Put the whole title thing out of your mind for a minute. If she weren’t a Princess, would you even be talking to me right now?”
