“Well, I would love that, but who is going to sail the boat if my arms are wrapped around you?”

“We could try to fix the fountain,” Bexley suggested.

“I didn’t bring you here to help me around the house,” Alex replied.

“Whydidyou bring me here?” Bexley asked, smiling to herself.

“Because this is what it could be like, Bex. I know there’s a lot more to it than this, but when it’s just us, this is what it could be like.”

CHAPTER 29

She did her best not to make a sound, but the room was small, and she couldn’t turn the light on. Alex moved to her bag, which she’d left on the floor next to the sofa. Using the fire as her light, she pulled out the clothes she’d bought specifically for tonight. She hoped Bexley would love the surprise as she dressed in layers quietly and moved to the bed, where Bexley lay asleep. Alex stared at her for a long while before she placed the clothes she’d pulled from the wardrobe onto the bed. Then, she moved to Bexley’s side and knelt in front of the beautiful woman lying asleep in her bed. She almost didn’t want to wake her. It had been a long day, and Bexley could use a full night of sleep, but this was too good to pass up. Alex had already looked outside, and the conditions were perfect. They only had two nights here, and she didn’t want to risk them not showing up tomorrow night.

“Bex,” she whispered.

Bexley didn’t wake.

“Sweetheart,” she whispered.

Nothing. Bexley was a sound sleeper, it appeared.

“My love,” she whispered and ran her hand through Bexley’s hair.

Bexley’s eyes finally opened slowly.

“Alex? Is everything okay?”

“Everything’s fine. I want to take you somewhere.”

“What time is it?” Bexley asked, rolling over onto her back.

Alex moved to sit on the side of the bed next to her and placed her hand on Bexley’s other side, leaning over her.

“It’s late. They show up better at night,” she replied.

“What are you talking about?”

“Remember when you told me you’ve only ever seen the lights when they weren’t at their best?”

“The lights?” Bexley rubbed at her eyes and looked adorable. “Wait. The Northern Lights?”

“They’re bright tonight, Bex.” Alex cupped Bexley’s cheek. “And I’ve arranged something for us if you’re up for it.”

Bexley sat up, bringing them close together.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing crazy, but youwillget cold.”

???

Minutes later, when Bexley was sufficiently bundled in Alex’s outerwear, Alex opened the door for them.

“We’re going for a bit of a hike,” she said to Bexley when she walked outside.

“A hike? I’m wearing your shoes, which are at least a size too big. I can’t hike. It’s the middle of…”

“Bex, look up,” Alex told her.
