“But if I spend that money, I’ll have nothing to pay you with. Not until I find a way to get my trust fund.”

“Let me worry about that,” he said.

She shook her head with more vehemence than he could have thought possible for such a sweet woman. “No. I won’t let you do more for me. I refuse to owe you or be owned.”

“You have a trust fund, don’t you? You can pay me back when the time comes.”

Amelia considered this for a few moments before she nodded. “Okay. It’s a deal.”

Wilder smiled. He’d never take her up on that deal though. She was his to take care of, and that’s exactly what he would do.

SEVEN

WILDER

Wilder paced the long hallway and the entryway as he waited for Amelia to join him. She was getting ready for their day, but she was taking much longer than he would have liked.

Even an hour away from her made him ache.

It was a deep and burning longing that terrified him.

He could ignore it before, when he knew she was married. When there were years between him and the last time he saw her.

But now that she was in his home and his to protect, it hurt him—physically hurt him—to be away from her. How in the fuck was he supposed to keep his hands—and his feelings—to himself when his skin was begging for her touch?

He ran a hand through his hair and tried to compose himself. He was a professional. He was the alpha of his pack, for god’s sake. He had self-control. He had power.

He could resist making a move on his mate.

“Are you okay?” Amelia stopped halfway down the stairs, staring at him, pacing.

Wilder gave a tight nod and tried to smile at her. He was rusty in that department. He hadn’t had a reason to smile in so long. “I’m fine. I just have a lot on my mind.”

“Does it have anything to do with the human who was waiting for you on your doorstep in the middle of the night?” she joked.

He grinned. It was effortless this time. “Yes. It does. I’m just trying to figure out where to take you. Someplace you’ve never been before. Somewhere Greg won’t think to look.”

“I doubt he would think I’ve goneshopping.” She walked down the rest of the steps. “Actually, it does seem pretty frivolous to go shopping right now.”

“Are you kidding? You need clothes, and you need to feel like yourself. For all we know, you’ve got one hell of a battle trying to divorcehim. It will help you to recapture who you were before.”

The corners of her mouth turned up with a tentative smile. “You might be right.”

“Of course, I’m right. I have an idea. Let’s go to Paris.”

“Paris?” she shook her head. “I don’t want to use my passport. That would make it way too easy for Greg to find me.”

“Not really. If he thinks you’re gone to Paris, then he won’t be looking for you here. He’ll be scouring the rest of Europe, the rest of the world, to find you.”

She sighed. “Well, maybe. But how in the hell are we supposed to get to Paris on such short notice?”

Wilder chuckled. The sound surprised both of them. “Don’t you worry about that,” he said. “I have my ways.”

“Care to enlighten me?”

He laughed again. He was surprised by how quick he was to laugh when Amelia was around. Just her presence was completely changing who he was. He felt lighter. Happier. More himself than he had ever felt.

“Any chance you can let me surprise you with it?”
