Her face was flushed with lust. Her desire scented the air, but he couldn’t let that sway him. It was much too soon. Much too quick.

“We should get back to the airfield and fly home. By this time, Greg will know you’re in Paris, and I’ll be more comfortable once he’s out there, chasing a fake lead.”

She licked her lips and stepped away from him. “Oh. Okay. Sure.”

He motioned for her to lead the way while he dropped a wad of cash on the table. He followed behind her, not wanting to stand beside her. If he did, he would reach for her hand.

Wilder stuffed his hands in his pockets and tried to forget the best kiss of his life.

TEN

AMELIA

Amelia was confused.

Sure, she wasn’t exactly experienced in kissing and everything else to do with the male-female dynamics that made a real relationship. But that didn’t make her an idiot.

She knew—beyond the shadow of a doubt—that Wilder had wanted her on that Paris terrace. For fuck’s sake! The man had tossed a table aside to get closer to her. Surely that meant he longed for her.

Yet, that man vanished.

As they flew back to London, Wilder sat as far away from her as possible in the plane. He kept his eyes on his phone, and he did his best to pretend she wasn’t there.

The kiss wasn’t bad. Even if it was her first—and second and third—she knew it had been good. So why was he acting like it hadn’t happened?

Was Wilder upset that he had broken the professional spirit of their arrangement? Did he regret touching her? Maybe he thought she was still too new to her freedom to kiss.

One thing was for certain.

Had she not told him she hadn’t been kissed before, he wouldn’t have stopped. But Wilder was an intelligent man. He knew if she hadn’t kissed anyone before, she would be a virgin.

Maybe that’s what bothered him.

Amelia had heard some of her friends talk when she was in high school. Some guys were dead set against ever sleeping with a virgin. Apparently, it made the woman fall in love forever.

Right.

Like a guy’s cock was somehow magical enough to bind a woman to him forever.

Men could really have an overinflated sense of their hold and power over women. It was a ridiculous thought, and she didn’t really believe that Wilder wasthatkind of man. She was just short on explanation. One that would be as rational as Wilder Wolverton.

“Wilder,” she said from her seat across the plane.

“Yes, Amelia?”

“Could you look at me when I’m talking to you?”

He stilled and took a second too long to meet her gaze. “Hmm?”

“I am sorry we kissed. I’m really sorry that it seems to have ruined the vibe between us. Can we pretend it never happened?”

His jaw clenched before he looked back down at his phone. She sighed and stood. She made her way over to him and gripped his phone, putting it behind her back. He was too stunned to speak. He blinked up at her in shock.

“Well?” she said. “Can we?”

“Give me my phone back,” he said.

She shook her head. “Not until this weirdness goes away.”
