In fact, it was one of the last times she saw Wilder. When they landed, he didn’t get into the car with her. “Padma here will take you back to the house. I’ve got work to do.”

“Fine,” she snapped.

She couldn’t explain why she was so hurt by his rejection. She had only just met him. But as Padma drove them from the airfield, Amelia couldn’t help but feel like she had done something terrible.

She’d allowed Wilder Wolverton into her heart.

ELEVEN

WILDER

Wilder watched the car drive away. Padma was the only living soul he trusted to take care of Amelia. But one thing was abundantly clear to him now.

Hecouldn’t be the one to take care of Amelia. He couldn’t be the one to protect her.

In fact, he was the one she needed protection from. He had kissed her without asking. He had stolen one of her firsts, and he would never forgive himself for that.

Not even after Amelia had straddled him on the seat, begging him to kiss her again. She was a human, a virgin, a recently freed woman.

She couldn’t understand the implications of a kiss between them.

Wilder had retreated to the cockpit, where he had called Padma for reinforcements. She would stay with Amelia at his place while he stayed in a hotel room. It was better that way. He couldn’t be in Amelia’s proximity.

She needed space to heal and discover who she was without him attacking her with kisses at every turn.

“Are you sure?” Padma had asked him. “You don’t want to stay with her?”

“Definitely. I can’t.”

“Fine, but if she asks questions, I won’t lie to her.”

“Just make sure that you keep her happy and safe.”

“You got it.”

Now that he was watching them drive away together, he wasn’t so sure if he had made the right decision. His wolf filled his mind with terrible howls of mourning. The last time he had let Amelia walk away, he didn’t know just how terrible her life was.

This time, he was the one sending her away.

“It’s to keep her safe,” he assured himself.

He would believe that lie so long as it served him.

* * *

Wilder was exhausted. The moon was up, but he wouldn’t stop. He kept on running. His paws met the cold forest ground over and over, but it didn’t matter how fast he moved through the trees. It didn’t matter how many runs he took in the woods.

Amelia was still everywhere on him.

He still smelled her scent on him.

He could even taste her on his lips.

That was impossible. Obviously. It was his imagination torturing him with everything he couldn’t have.

But she isn’t with her husband anymore. She didn’t even agree to the marriage. Surely that means that she is free to be with you. Why are you making this so much more complicated than it needs to be?

Wilder didn’t want to argue with his wolf, but it was harder to do now that he was literally in the wolf’s head.
