“I can see that, you idiot! How dare you fuck with me like that. I will have your asses for failing me!”

The two guards didn’t pay any attention to Greg. They ran toward their pride and shifted into big cats. Wilder and his three wolves stalked around them, snapping their teeth and growling low.

The man was wasting his breath.

Now that the fight was shifter against shifter, it went beyond the fact that Greg had hired shifter guards.

Now, this fight was about shifters who didn’t mind being mercenaries for human scum. It was about their role in his mate’s ordeal.

Wilder howled once before taking off at a run toward one of the lions. The feline tried to withdraw from the attack with a pounce through the air, but Wilder was ready. He kicked at the animal. It flew a few feet back and crashed against some thick-limbed trees. The cracking branches echoed through the woods, announcing a bloody battle.

Wilder quickly pounced on another lion. This time, he used his jowls to rip through one of his enemy’s paws. The lion cried out in pain before limping away. He wouldn’t be so easily defeated. He ran at Wilder, barely slowed by his injury.

Wilder didn’t mind. There was a lot of aggression and anger inside him that needed an out. His life had been terrible for five years, but that was nothing to what his mate had lived through. He could easily think himself responsible for not saving her all those years ago.

But the blame wasn’t his.

Any man who took a wife had a duty to take care of her. To make her happy. A marriage was a partnership, and Greg had messed with that. He had done so much harm in his selfishness, and Wilder could only make these mercenaries pay for this.

It spurred him on and gave him strength.

He didn’t need to look around him to know that his family—hispack—was fighting alongside him. They weren’t fighting for their mates, but they were no less motivated to win. This was for their alpha. For the safety of the pack.

It was for their growing family.

It made facing down two lions that much easier. He beat one back with a swipe of his claws, giving him enough time to hop on the other’s back. He bit down on the lion’s neck. He waited for his mouth to fill with blood before he let go.

The lion lay unconscious.

It left Wilder the chance to fight the other lion. There were a few gashes and injuries on his own body, but he ignored them completely. He had a job to do. He swiped and bit; he growled and howled. He fought with everything he had until the lion was beaten down and retreated.

The others had done well.

Every lion guard was too injured to fight, or they were completely passed out. Wilder did one last round around the inn before judging the whole parameter safe. Only then did he shift back into his human form.

“Well, that wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be,” Canaan said.

“We still have Greg in the inn,” Wilder reminded him. “You make sure he doesn’t try to escape through the front door. I’ll go and have a chat with him in the sunroom. Axton, Ryland, you two tie up the lions until the authorities get here.”

When he walked into the sunroom, Greg was nowhere to be seen. He wasn’t too surprised. Wilder sniffed the air and followed the vile scent of too much cologne to the front door. Greg was hiding in the closet, with his head buried in his hands.

“Greg Stevens,” Wilder said.

The man raised his chin in defiance. “The fuck you want? Let me go.”

“That won’t happen. You see, you’re a scumbag. You commit crimes all over the world without caring who you hurt. Not caring how many laws you break. That’s over now.”

“You think you can stop me?” Greg spat.

“Europol is on their way. You see, your secret business dealingswereshared with the authorities. You will never see or hear from Amelia again. She has told them everything. You’re finished.”

“And what? You think that with me behind bars, you’ll get your hands onthatcold fish?” Greg laughed. “Have fun with that. She’s no fun.”

Wilder grabbed Greg by the throat. “Never…ever… insult a woman like that. Especially not when she is an alpha’s mate.” Wilder couldn’t stop himself. He punched Greg right in the nose, rendering the man unconscious.

“It’s no less than he deserved,” Ryland shrugged when he walked through the front door. “But Europol might be pissed you broke his nose.”

Wilder shook his head. “I don’t know what you mean. He was like that when we found him.”
