Your wolf has been flagged by some alpha type names. I got you what I could without raising suspicions. Who is this chick?

Funny how her death hadn’t been announced or even documented. I had a feeling it would be in time by someone who was good at covering their tracks. If I wanted to get to the bottom of this, I needed to go to the restricted section.

I opened the door and stepped out into the hallway. There was a sign on the wall opposite where I stood that had a map of the floor. Crossing my fingers, I approached it, hoping that the restricted section was on this floor.

It wasn’t. Turned out the restricted section filled an entire level and was two floors up. I turned around and hurried to the elevator. I stepped inside, looking for a button to the fifth floor, but there was none.

Frowning, I hurried out of the elevator and back to the map, convinced I’d read it wrong, but nope, the restricted section was on the fifth floor. But how did I get there?

“You need to take the stairs,” Arden whispered, having snuck up to my side while I was distracted.

I looked down at her, and she flicked her dark blue eyes toward a door next to the elevator that I hadn’t noticed before. I nodded my thanks and strolled to the door purposefully. Opening it revealed a staircase, and painted on the wall was a big number three. Under it was a list of sections located on this floor.

Grabbing the railing, I started to ascend. I passed the big number four, not bothering to look at the list of sections located on that floor. I continued, climbing higher and higher realizing that there seemed to be more stairs.

I reached the next landing with a big number five painted on the wall. The only thing listed below was the word restricted in red letters. Next to the number, I found a crazy security door with a thumbprint reader.Authorized Persons Onlywas written on the door in big red letters that were obviously a warning.

I stepped closer to the door then paused, wondering if I was an authorized person. My new beta title had been announced, but I wasn’t the true beta of the pack, just the one next in line for the job. I studied the thumb pad and pursed my lips. Would an alarm go off if I wasn’t allowed? I had no idea, but it would be easy enough to explain away if it did.

Mind made up, I pressed my right thumb to the pad and waited for the machine to read it. A green light blinked at the top, then an audible click sounded as the security door unlocked. I was surprised that I was considered authorized but grateful, nonetheless.

I grabbed the handle and pulled. It was heavy, which spoke of the lengths the packs had gone to in order to keep the restricted section secure.

It closed behind me as I took in the dimly lit hallway. There were more doors lining the walls, with neon signs depicting what pack each belonged to. They were all red except for a green one that was halfway down the hall. The green sign readDaywa, and when I tried the handle, I found it unlocked.

I turned the knob to open the door, surprised by how well lit the interior was compared to the hallway. I closed the door and took a moment to take in the restricted sections.

A balcony stretched around the room. There were four ladders attached to the walkway that led down into the restricted archives. The room was two floors tall making all those stairs make sense. Bookshelves stood freely in the middle of the floor while more lined the walls below the walkway.

At the far end of the massive room, I noticed what looked to be a sitting area. I walked to a ladder and climbed down. The walls had to be around thirty feet high with, shelves that covered them. It was impressive.

No sooner had my feet touched the floor than I heard my name. I whipped around, not expecting to find anyone in here.

“Found our pack’s restricted area, huh?” Ledger remarked, leaning against a freestanding bookshelf with a smirk on his face.

“This place is nuts,” I said, glancing around and wondering what secrets it held.

“Yeah, it is,” Ledger agreed, his green eyes watching me with suspension. “What are you doing here?”

“I was just coming to see how your research is going into the Cage,” I replied, casually sticking my hands into my pants pockets.

Ledger studied me for a moment while I perused the nearest shelves, noticing that most weren’t just books but piles of paper. How did anyone find anything here?

“I’ll show you what I’ve learned so far,” Ledger said, waving for me to follow him.

“Anything useful?” I joked, trailing him down the aisles and to a seating area on the opposite side.

“Yes, actually,” he answered vaguely.

Comfy high back chairs were scattered around the small space, but there were also tables spread out with random stuff strewn across them.

“How do you find anything in here?” There weren’t signs on the bookshelf ends to help locate a subject.

“Perusing mostly, but if there’s something specific, you can always ask the archivist,” Ledger said, stopping at a table with papers spread out and books piled on the ends.

“I didn’t see anyone when I came in.” I frowned, thinking I’d missed their desk or office.

“He’s very rarely here. Plus, I have no idea who he is.”
