I still wasn’t sure if we could move beyond the past. Could I forget what he did and move on with him? Or would I always see the betrayal in his eyes?

I bit my lip to keep it from quivering as I looked everywhere but at him. This was my fault, and while I absolutely loved it, I couldn’t get past the guilt of leading him on.

‘You’re complicating it,’my wolf chided in my thoughts.‘You got your rocks off, so what? I’d bet you my big fluffy tail that he doesn’t regret any of it.’

Her words were meant to comfort. I understood them, even appreciated them. I’d have to find some way to live with this.

“Pearl?” Rylan asked, drawing my attention.

He’d stepped back away from me, his eyes averted as he ran a hand through his hair, looking as uncomfortable as I felt.

“S-so… um, you were saying something about the prisoner Faela?” I asked, praying that he’d take the opening and just pretend like the last several minutes hadn’t happened.

“I’ve been studying her history to hopefully find a clue on how she escaped,” Rylan said, clearing his throat and thankfully deciding to ignore everything like I’d hoped.

“Find anything?” I slid off the table and turned back to the table.

Blueprints and maps met my eyes, and I did my best to focus on what was in front of me while pushing thoughts of Rylan to the back of my mind. I’d be able to analyze the situation later. Right now, I needed to learn everything that he knew about the last Alpha Seeker.

“This red circle was Faela’s cell.” Rylan pointed at the map. “This is the route we think she took to escape, but there’s no way to know without going there.”

“Are you planning to?” It was a good plan, one that had crossed my mind. Maybe Faela left some sort of clue for me to find. That seemed like a stretch though because she was so weak when she’d found me by the pond.

Still, I couldn’t shake the idea of seeing her cell. The room she’d spent all of her time in made me curious. A message or not, going to the Cage felt right, and I hoped that this would answer questions.

I studied the blueprint and memorized the red line’s path. If she’d left the prison that way, it stood to reason that I could get into it the same way. Adrenaline entered my blood, and I hoped that Rylan couldn’t smell my excitement, and if he did, hopefully he got the wrong idea.

I circled the table, searching the books and papers stacked around it. A soft blue cover caught my eye, and I reached for it. My fingers wrapped around the spine, and as soon as my skin made contact, a shock ran up my arm. I jerked away, gasping as my left arm felt like it had been electrocuted.

Rylan had disappeared from the area. I breathed a sigh of relief, glad that he wasn’t nearby so I didn’t have to explain my reaction. Carefully, I approached the table again, pulling my sleeve down over my hands and reaching for the book.

Nothing shocked me, so I continued to pull it from the stack of papers it was hidden in. The cover was plain, without a title or anything to identify what it was about. I lifted the cover and found that it wasn’t a reference book but a journal. Intrigued, I flipped pages until I came to the first entry. There wasn’t a date, but judging by the handwriting, the owner of this journal was male.

For a second, I had an alarming feeling that this was Rylan’s journal. I almost slammed it closed, but curiosity got the better of me.

Today marks the first day of my exile. Hopefully writing about my time away can help me clear my mind. The Gala was last night. I did not expect to find anyone. The females that swarmed me weren’t interested in anything but my status and title. I couldn’t handle the suffocating feeling, so I slipped away. I found an open door and quickly ducked inside, closing and locking it, praying the horde of female admirers would get bored and go away.

I turned around, and that was when I saw her. A girl stood by a long table, her blue eyes wide with surprise at my sudden appearance. She wore a light blue gown that seemed to glow as moonlight shone through the skylight above. Her skin was creamy white and looked soft. Her scent filled my nose, making my wolf growl in my head possessively.

Mine.

I wasn’t sure how it happened, but I’d somehow stumbled upon the most interesting person I had ever met. We bantered for a couple minutes, getting to know each other quickly. She was dominant and didn’t flinch at my gaze, but instead met it with a defiance that made my mouth water. My wolf seemed to purr in my thoughts, urging me to touch her.

To my surprise, she melted at my touch and came apart in my arms. It was the most meaningful experience I’d ever had, and I knew that I’d do whatever it took to make her mine.

Her white hair spread out on the table as I took her to the edge over and over all night long. We couldn’t keep our hands off each other. The moments when we were one, I won’t soon forget.

With Faelynn resting on my chest and the moonlight shining down on us, I knew without a shadow of a doubt that she was my mate. Now that I’d found her, I couldn’t live without her by my side.

While my mate slept, I was curious about the research she’d been in the middle of when I interrupted. The book she had been holding was stories about the Moon Spirit, one of which was about the legendary Alpha Seeker.

My eyes froze on the last two words.Alpha Seeker. The female wolf’s name I recognized from my research as the first Alpha Seeker, Faela’s mother.

Tingles ran down my spine as I closed the journal quickly. My mind was racing with possibilities when I felt a presence looming behind me. I turned and caught sight of stormy green-gray eyes.

I inhaled sharply. The menace in his gaze demanded that I look away, but I couldn’t. Rylan’s wolf was in control, and he wasn’t in a playful mood.

I set the book down then turned fully around, not comfortable with him looking over my shoulder. Our eyes locked, and I felt my wolf push forward. This was a standoff between two dominant wolves, and mine wasn’t about to stand down. Not to him. Not to anyone.
