Chapter Fourteen

Rylan

Pearl’s eyes met my wolf’s, her chin tipped up, and I could see the defiance in her gaze. My chest rumbled with a growl, a clear warning to her that I was not in the mood for a dominance battle.

Her rejection earlier caused my wolf to go feral. The scent of her orgasm filling the room and her submission to the pleasure I alone could give her was enough to push me to the limits of my control.

With strength I didn’t know my wolf possessed, he’d pushed forward, taking control of my body. He needed to face Pearl himself. I understood his need to confront her, and while I agreed, I remained close, ready to step in if he went too far.

“Your rejection was unnecessary,” my wolf said, voice much deeper than my own.

“It’s my right to reject whoever I want,” Pearl’s wolf retorted, her lip curling with suppressed anger.

“Not me. Never me.” I stepped forward, invading her space, caging her in against the table.

“You betrayed us,” she said softly, words full of anger and hurt. “I have every right.”

My fist slammed down on the table, hard enough to make it rock violently. Pearl didn’t even flinch. My wolf hummed in my mind, impressed by her.

“Why didn’t you come to us? You know we’d never betray you.”

“But you did,” she snarled, her eyes flashing with rage.

“How do you know?”

“It’s the only possible answer.”

“No, it’s not,” I growled, raising my hand and gently cupping her cheek. “There’s so much you do not know.”

Her eyes narrowed as she seemed to think about what I said. I leaned down, running my nose up her throat, breathing her in. Her sharp intake of breath told me that she knew what I was doing. I wanted to grab her and devour her lips, taste every inch of her skin until she begged for more. Begged for me.

I could feel her heart beating against my chest, the rhythm comforting. My wolf huffed in my head, frustrated by the block. That made me pause and replay the thought in my head. What block?

“You need to ask yourself why? Why would I betray you and your family? You and your family were my family.” My wolf’s words cut through me, making me wonder if I was missing something. “Pearl, I would never willingly betray you.”

Her eyes grew wider as the words sank in. Meanwhile, I was searching my memories, trying to figure out what the hell my wolf was talking about.

‘It’s not time,’he said vaguely, and I got the impression that these were dangerous waters.

“We should talk, then,” Pearl spoke quietly, her wolf having withdrawn, giving control back to her human half.

“When you’re ready,” my wolf agreed, backing away and giving her space.

She fidgeted with her hands and sleeves before turning and grabbing a book from the pile. “Can I borrow this?”

It was the journal I’d brought with me. Of all the books on the table, how did she find this one?

“It’s not mine,” I lied, eyeing the journal like it somehow had a mind of its own. “You can read it though.”

I wasn’t ready to part with the book just yet. When my wolf had pushed forward, needing to confront our mate, I’d felt something. A deep well of power that I’d always known was there but was unable to touch. But I felt it then. A vast bubbling chasm of unbridled power. The small touch I’d been able to get made me want to reread the journal again. This well inside of me was described in that journal. The old alpha had explained in detail what it was and how he’d come to harness it during his years in exile. It had been woken by physical intimacy with his mate. Was that why I’d felt it?

Looking back at Pearl, I began to realize that must have been the case. The more intimate we became, the more power I could access.

It was strange though. Raff’s mate was an Alpha Seeker, who had somehow unlocked his true potential. The same thing had happened to me after our intimacy. Could Pearl somehow be the key to accessing that power? She wasn’t the Alpha Seeker though.

“What are you doing tomorrow?” Her question yanked me from my thoughts.

“I’m going to inspect the cage with Ledger. I’ll be gone all day.”
