We pushed through the branches, a growl ready in our throat, only to discover Ledger with three other alpha-apparents standing around a body.

My wolf tapped out and gave me control again. The change came over me quickly, with only the briefest twinge of pain.

“What happened?” I asked, once I was back on two legs.

“She escaped,” Ledger said flatly, like finding an old woman’s body in the woods was a normal, everyday thing.

“Escaped from where?” I bent down, ignoring my nakedness to get a better look at the woman.

“The cage,” Dane, the alpha-apparent from the Aruna Pack, answered.

“An old wolf in the cage?” I murmured, not expecting an answer since the cage was meant for the most ruthless of criminals and rogues.

“She was, perhaps, the most dangerous one in there,” Cam said, solemnly looking at the prone form on the ground.

“Dangerous?” I snorted. She was an old wolf.

Why?I almost asked out loud but bit my tongue when Ledger snarled and then kicked the body.

“She was the last Alpha Seeker,” he growled, wide chest heaving as he reigned in his anger.

“Alpha Seeker?” It was a term I was familiar with but only from the journal, the author was very careful to protect his mate’s identity.

“The Alpha Seeker is a legend,” Dane commented, acting aloof, but I could tell he was bothered by the discovery.

“I’m not familiar,” I lied, turning my face back to the woman on the ground.

“She or someone from her line seeks out the one true alpha, the one who can unite the packs.”

Unite the packs?

Now there’s a thought, one I was also familiar with since the journal came from the Aibek clan.

“She’s dead now though,” Cam pointed out the obvious, making me fight an eye roll.

“It doesn’t matter,” Ledger grumbled, still angry, but it had turned to exasperation. “The Seeker power is passed down to the next generation.”

“Do you know if she had children? A mate?” There had to be an explanation of why she felt it so important to escape when this close to death.

“As far as I’m aware, she’s the last.” Ledger ran his hand through his hair while pacing beside the pond.

“How can you know that?” I dared to ask.

“Because she was my father’s true mate, and she rejected him.”

Chapter Three

Pearl

I stared at my reflection in the mirror, blinking periodically, hoping that what I was seeing was a trick of some sort. My long, beautiful ebony hair was gone, replaced with strands of white that almost glowed like moonlight. That wasn’t the only change either. Whatever the old woman did to me permanent. Delicate swirls of silver-white ran the whole length of my arm, the lines shimmering like tinsel reflecting light.

The new artwork wasn’t nearly on the same level as my hair. Probably because I could hide the markings easily, but my head was a different story. Black didn’t all of a sudden turn white without help. I ran my fingers through a lock of it, marveling at the glimmer that was almost pearlescent.

After I left the pond, I’d come straight home, hoping that my scent wouldn’t be noticed. It was on my property technically, so they shouldn’t pursue it any further.

My eyes kept flicking down to my arm then back up to my hair. Panic was there ready to cloud my mind; the only one not freaking out was my wolf. She thought it was strange but hadn’t had nearly the reaction I did, which was suspicious.

‘How?’my wolf asked, doing the wolf equivalent of crossing her arms.
