Pressure weighed down on me, and while it was oppressive, it wasn’t hard for me to shake off. Judging by the reaction of the alphas and surrounding wolves, they couldn’t do the same.

My left arm burned in warning, but I couldn’t pinpoint the threat. I stepped forward, following my instincts that were screaming that something wasn’t right. The wolves around me were under attack. I could feel them fighting, but they were trapped, locked inside their human counterparts, unable to help.

I did not see things going this way.

‘Me either,’my wolf said, sounding worried.

‘There’s a strange presence here,’the Moon Spirit whispered in my mind.

‘Who’s doing this?’I wondered, stepping to her side, trusting that Rylan could take care of himself while I tried to figure out what was happening.

The alphas were staring at me and the white wolf beside me with wide terrified eyes. Their wolves were trapped inside, and somehow the human was trapped too. No one moved in the room except for the rapid chest movements as panic set in.

‘Looks like you and I are the only ones not affected.’the Moon Spirit spoke slowly, like she thought her words might be overheard by someone else.

Rylan wasn’t affected.

At that thought, I turned to see if Rylan was okay, but before I could finish, I felt the sharp touch of steel against my skin. I froze, my wolf squirming inside, demanding to be let out so she could fight whoever was threatening us.

“I wouldn’t move,” a female voice advised from behind me.

Her words washed over me like a wave, but it was sticky. It clung to me, trying to find somewhere to grab on to. I shivered. It felt like a bucket of slime had just been poured over my head, coating my body in gross sludge.

The Moon Spirit whipped around, teeth bared and ready to fight whoever had spoken.

“Uh uh,” the voice admonished.

A finger snapped, then I inhaled sharply as the blade point pierced my skin. A trickle of blood ran down my back from my neck. The wound stung, but my wolf healing quickly stopped the bleeding.

My eyes were rolling frantically in their sockets as panic threatened to engulf me. I couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe without the cold steel reminding me that I was centimeters away from being killed.

“Turn around,” the female voice ordered. Since I was the only one facing the opposite direction, I hesitantly moved, careful not to accidentally cut myself on the weapon at my throat.

The first thing I saw in my rotation was a woman standing about ten feet from me. She wore a black dress that shimmered with dark blue iridescent tulle. It fit her like a glove, and while it would be lovely on anyone else, she made it look sinister.

“Tamra?”

The alpha-female of my pack and Rylan’s aunt bowed her head.

I opened my mouth to ask what the hell was going on, but I’d completed my rotation and finally saw who was holding the blade at my throat.

Rylan.

His eyes were dull green pools with no hint of gray, which meant his wolf was locked away as well. Tears coated my throat at the vacancy in his eyes, like he didn’t recognize me.

“I wouldn’t try.” Tamra warned like she could read my unformed thoughts. “He’s under my control, as is everyone else in this room.”

‘Why are you doing this?’the Moon Spirit growled menacingly, speaking in my mind, and from the look of it, Tamra’s.

“Isn’t it obvious?” Tamra gestured around to the surrounding room full of wolf shifters. “I’ve controlled all the packs for years. Close to a century, in fact, and I’m not about to let you or some legendary Alpha Seeker take it all away.”

She controlled the packs. How?

Tamra sighed, looking angry at the confusion.

“Bear was courting me before he met his true mate, Faela. He came to me to explain everything so we could hopefully part ways amicably, narrow-minded on his part. I wasn’t about to give him up so he could become the alpha to unite the packs with the Alpha Seeker by his side. No one should have the power to alter fate. We were meant to be together, so I made it happen.”

“You sent Faela to the cage.” it wasn’t a question but a statement. The pieces of the puzzle were starting to fall into place.
