“She had to go. I couldn’t kill her, but I managed to stage a death, so she’d have to be imprisoned.”

That was just wrong. Faela hadn’t done anything to anyone but was sentenced to a pit in the cage because she was born in the Alpha Seeker line. She was the last one, the last chance the Moon Spirit had to bring balance to her creation before we’d all be destroyed, and this woman had fucked everything up.

“How did you get everyone to blindly follow you?” I asked but knew that no one was truly blindly following her. She’d manipulated and lied her way to the top, but it didn’t make sense how she was doing everything.

“You make it seem like they had a choice in the matter.” She laughed, the sound making Rylan step closer, the sharp edge slicing through my flesh like butter.

‘How are you controlling them?’the Moon Spirit demanded, its rage evident in every syllable.

“With the help of your opposite,” she answered as the aura around her shifted to something darker. “Everyone knows that male wolves have wildness in them that leads to the animals’ dark nature. No one questioned the darkness in males until I did. I sought out that part and found a whole new side to our nature. One full of power and control.”

A shadow filled the room, dimming the lights and dropping the temperature several degrees.

“You seek balance while I have awakened chaos, and through that, I can control them all. Every single wolf that has heard my voice has been hypnotized. Their dark nature calls to them, and they are helpless to fight it.”

“So, what’s your plan? To control everyone so they can do your evil bidding?” There had to be holes in her plan for domination.

“Still an idiot.” Tamra tsked, walking toward me until she stood right next to Rylan. She ran a finger down his face then brought the same finger to her lips and licked it.

Fury erupted in my chest at her touching my mate. I pressed my lips together, fighting the urge to rip her throat out. Not that I cared about me, but Rylan was still under her control.

“You know he was very stubborn and refused to give up your family as enforcers. It took days to break him down. He’s incredibly strong, but once I threatened your wellbeing, he became all too compliant.” She laughed, swishing her dress around her ankles like she was a little girl excited to be dressed up. “He doesn’t remember any of that, and you hated him for it. When all along, he was just protecting you.”

A tear ran down my cheek unbidden while Rylan continued to hold the blade to my neck, acting like some mindless pawn. He wasn’t though. He was my mate, the alpha who would unite the packs; he was stronger than any of the other alphas. He could fight this.

He just needed a little help.

My left hand twitched, and I knew I had to touch him. The Moon Spirit said that touch would clear the mind and since we weren’t mated yet, it was the only way to break the hypnosis over him.

The Moon Spirit nudged my hand with its nose, like it was encouraging me. Tamra began speaking to the white wolf beside me while I turned my attention to my mate.

His eyes were still flat, like the lights were on, but nobody was home. I shifted, testing if he would react to my movement. He didn’t, but for a split second, I thought I saw a flash of green.

That gave me hope. It was as if he was trying to tell me he was still there, still fighting.

His tux covered his body, and I knew that skin to skin was what I needed in order to break the spell.

Did I dare reach up to touch his face? His hand was closer, but he was holding the knife with it. If I touched him, it could startle him, and he could cut me. I healed quickly, but a deep cut would take longer to heal, weakening me.

There didn’t seem to be any other option. No matter where I touched, I knew I would get cut. I just needed to do it at the right moment.

The Moon Spirit audibly growled beside me, giving me the opening that I needed.

Moving smoothly, I lifted my left hand and wrapped my fingers around the wrist that held the knife.

Green flames erupted in his eyes as the blade sank into my skin. Warm liquid flowed down to my chest, staining my dress crimson.

Rylan shuddered and the knife moved, cutting deeper and deeper as he fought to shake off whatever was holding him and his wolf captive.

Blood continued to gush from the wound, making me think that it wasn’t just an ordinary weapon.

His irises slowly returned to the right color, followed swiftly by white hot fury. He looked me over, seeing the blood coating my front and the blade he still held in his hand.

Horror and shock rocked him as he withdrew his hand. Blood spurted, and I realized that he had cut deeper than I thought he could. My vision grew hazy as more blood spilled, causing a puddle to form at my feet.

I stared into Rylan’s eyes, willing him to let go and figure out how to release everyone. This wasn’t my time to die, but this was definitely a fight that wasn’t meant for me.

Shadows crept into my vision, and I knew I would lose consciousness soon. I just hoped that Rylan had the sense to stay in contact with my skin or we were doomed.
