“Oh, you think you were the only thing in this room smelling like rotten milk?” Georgia maneuvered around my bed and over the pile of pillows on the floor. “Climb back in there and you might come back out with bed bugs.” She laughed.

Tatiana eyed me. “For real, Gigi, you are worrying us.” I wanted to believe the sunken look on her face was genuine. But Tatiana was one of the main people on “fuck Shawn” energy, throughout my relationship. She always claimed he wasn’t worth my time. Made him question why I’d even pick her as the maid of honor, but it was easy. Regardless of what she said about him, she always had my back. No matter what. “Let us take you out tonight, and if after that you want to succumb to the sheets again, we’ll let you have it.” She nodded her head. “Right, Georgia?”

Georgia saluted and agreed, “Right.” Her wide eyes and overstretched grin was a little more believable. Of everyone, Georgia understood my soul ties to Shawn. I didn’t have to explain to her that he was a decent guy, because the parts of him I loved were like our daddy. And our daddy was not only a good dad, but an amazing husband. Never did anything to disrespect Mama, loved her with all his heart, and made sure any and everybody was aware of it.

Loving old school cars and long Sunday drives wasn’t enough of a similarity to make Shawn a decent guy though. Because outside of that, he and my daddy weren’t alike at all. Daddy made sure to let me know that after I canceled the wedding. He threatened to find him and run him over with his Chevelle. He reminded me, “Any man who mistreats my daughter isn’t worth the smut on my tires.”

“So…” Georgia stared at me from across the room.

“Fine,” I finally said. “I’ll go, but” I snatched the romper from Tatiana’s grip. “I’m not wearing this.”

As I rummaged through the closet, Georgia peeked her head through the door. “So glad you went with option number one.”

I eyed her as I shuffled between dresses, and blouses. “What was my other option?” That one may have been better than the one that involved me leaving my safe cocoon.

“Me and Tati rolling up on Shawn and whooping his ass for good measure.”

I scrunched my nose. “Georgia,” I sighed. “That won’t change anything.”

She laughed as she cracked her knuckles like head bussing was her day job. “Sure the hell wouldn’t but it’d make me feel better.”

Tatiana yelled over her shoulder, “Me too.”

We all laughed, and it felt like the portal to my hell opened a little. I pulled a black shirt over my head, and a black pair of shorts over my hips. I stalked out of the closet with a pair of black stilettos in my hand.

Tatiana had her finger on her chin, and her head tilted sideways. “Okay, it’s giving ninja.” She chuckled. “You sure we aren’t going to buss his head open?” She pointed to my heel. “I’m sure that could do some real damage.”

“Is it not giving mourning? Grieving a lot?” No matter how things ended, it still left me feeling like I’d loss a piece of me. Neither Georgia nor Tatiana responded to that. Instead, they walked from my room as fast as possible. I followed behind them warning, “Two drinks then I’m bringing my ass back to the house.”

ChapterTwo

Angelo

My only focus should have been football. Days leading up to training camp, I should have been in the gym. Binging film. Preparing my mind for the season ahead.

Not hosting a four-day weekend with Cam and Jared. Time with the three of us only spelled disaster, especially with Cam involved. But as soon as I picked the two of them up from the airport, I was thankful for a break from my building anxiety.

What I needed was a minute to unwind. To get my mind off football.

As Cam said, “This shit is about to be your life. Man, kick back a little.”

I took it to heart.

Jared leaned over and said, “Man, Phoenix ain’t too bad.” Then he rubbed it in that he was back home, in Dallas. “Not as nice as home, but it’s cool. I’ll have to keep it on my roster.”

I laughed. “Bruh, you about to be the Dynasty’s franchise player, they not letting you go that easy.” Unlike me, Jared went in the first round of the draft. His ass was living large and enjoying every penny of his new earnings.

“You might be right,” he laughed. It was like he popped his collar when he said, “After I ball out this season, I won’t be going anywhere.”

That was one thing we agreed on. I was about to give Fury everything. Even if it meant working my way up from the bench. “This shit kinda sucks though.” I sipped from my glass of rum. “I can’t even remember the last time I didn’t start in a game. Shit.” I shook my head. “I’ve been on the field since peewee.” I laughed.

Cam said, “Your little rock-headed ass was slanging the ball back then.” It was when all three of us played the same sport. Playing as hard as we could until the two of them decided getting hit, on purpose, wasn’t the life they wanted to live. “Imagine if we all stayed playing football.”

I turned my head to the side and twisted my lips. “You? Football?” I laughed. “Instead of getting drafted, you would have been clocking into somebody’s desk job.”

Cam’s chest poked out. “What you sayin’ man?”

Jared raised his hand and said, “That your ass couldn’t cut it in football.” He smirked. “Basketball either.”
