Cam held his arms up like he was toting a bat. “Good thing ya boy can smack the shit out of the ball then, huh?” Before we could continue with our round of who was better, Cam’s focus left us. He stared the bar down so hard I thought he was summonsing himself another drink.

“What is it?” I asked, trying to snake my head around his. “You looking so hard whatever it is might melt.” My eyes scanned the sports bar he insisted we stop into.

“Naw.” He licked his lips and rubbed the little hair he had on his chin. “Not that one right there. Told you I heard this was the hot spot. Had to wait them out.” Cam was in a trance, but Jared wasn’t interested in participating in his foolery.

“Bruh, if you thirsty just finish off your drink.” Jared laughed. “Always out here trying to run up on a chick. They rolled in what,” he tilted his watch up, “five minutes ago and you already trying to pounce.”

That was Cam though. Of the three of us, he was the one most likely to catch the itch. His ass stayed on top of some mess he should leave alone. We warned him things were different now that we were in the league, but his ass didn’t listen. That was like fuel to his fire. He ramped up and was ready to go at all times.

“Gotta get in where I fit in, feel me?” He grabbed his glass and made his way from our table to the bar before he considered if me and Jared were behind him. And we weren’t.

We stayed back watching him. I was waiting for the day when he met his match. The chick who’d shoot his shot down. “How long before they return him back to the table?” I asked Jared.

He shook his head and reminded me, “I don’t know how, but that dude got A-plus game. He never fails.” He scoffed. “I don’t know how they fall for his shit, but they do. Every time.”

I wagged my head. “You right. They do.” I laughed. “Should we save them from him?”

He groaned. “I wasn’t trying to be on nothing this weekend, but fuck it, let’s go.”

“Three athletes walk into a bar…” Cam was serious. His ass was using us as his pickup line.

“Naw.” I laughed. “You gotta be joking right now?”

The women looked at the three of us wide-eyed. Well, two of them did. The other woman looked disinterested and ready to leave. My kind of girl. She wasn’t falling for Cam’s whack ass pickup line.

I eased myself to the other side of her and said, “Hey, I’m Angelo.” I stuck my hand out for her to shake but she didn’t budge. Her eyes remained glued to the cup in her hand. It was like whatever was in the bottom of the glass consumed her. Every inch of her. “Ugh, hey,” I said again, trying to get her attention, “you good?”

I looked from her to her friends, a little panic settling in as she didn’t budge.

Finally, one of the other women looked her way and nudged her elbow. “That fine ass man is talking toyou.” She flashed me a smile, then her eyes narrowed when the beautystill didn’t move her eyes from the cup. She sighed then leaned over to her ear and whispered something I couldn’t hear.

Her profile was beautiful. I couldn’t see her eyes or the lift in her lips when she smiled. But her smooth skin and curly hair were giving mefresh and simple.Nothing elaborate. Not like her girls, who looked like they had one plan in mind, and that was to impress somebody in that lounge. She looked like she couldn’t care less, and for some reason that was what drew me into her web.

If she was trying to fly under the radar, she failed with me. She was flashing big red lights on my screen, and I wanted to see more of her.

Her eyes only blinked my way momentarily, and still the entire room went quiet. I got lost in her eyes, and where they fell again after she turned away. “Sorry.” Her voice was soft. “I’m not up for conversation right now.”

That wasn’t on her friend’s bingo card though, because she sighed so loud I watched her face transform. “For real?” she blurted.

“Yes, for real,” the beauty responded a little louder. Then it was back to a barely audible whisper when she said, “What do you want me to do?”

“Talk. Get to know him. That’s it,” the woman hissed between a tight grin. Jared was behind her and exchanged a look at me before shrugging his shoulder. She turned back to him and said, “Now, you,” as a finger trailed down his chest.

I held in the laugh that was forming in my stomach. “Hey, it’s cool. I can sit here and watch this.” I pointed to the screen where a man had his fishing line hanging over the boat.

“You watch fishing?” She smirked and I saw a glimpse of her lips. Plump and smooth.

I licked mine out of habit and nodded.

“Really?”

“Why not?” I argued. “It’s a sport. What can I say, I like competition.”

When she laughed it was like the sky burst open, and another realm was revealed.

“Let me guess, not a fan?”

She shook her head, but her laugh didn’t continue. Instead, her eyes were deep into her glass again. Before I could dig into her problems, Cam was buying a round of shots.
