“I do see.” Deborah threw her hands up in the air, wanting to scream with frustration. “You’re scared. You’re scared of making a commitment. You’re scared of giving it a shot and then being left alone. Welcome to the club, Luna.”

“Alex.” His tone was belligerent. “And I’m not scared. Just . . . wary. So sue me.”

“Scared. Me, too. More than you can imagine, but you’re the first guy in my life who’s made me want to at least try. I thought you wanted to try, too.”

Alex swiped at his face with the back of his hand, his gaze on the ground. Finally, he looked up at her, his eyes almost black with emotion. “I can’t have any more people I love leave me.”

That was it, his need and his fear laid bare at Deborah’s feet. The raw agony in his hoarse voice propelled her another half-step forward. “I can’t make any promises. No one can. But I’m willing to depend on God to see us through this, if you are.”

Conflicting emotions chased each other across his face. He sighed as if he’d been holding his breath. “You won’t freak on me?”

“I can’t guarantee I won’t freak.” Ignoring quivering fear, she forced herself to reach for his hand. “In fact, there’s a good chance I will.”

His hand met hers halfway. His grip was gentle, but sure. “You’re going to make me crazy, aren’t you?”

“More than usual? Probably.”

“This is nuts.” He slid his fingers between hers so they were entwined and then kissed her cheek, a feather of a kiss. “God help us both.”

Deborah leaned into the kiss. “He will.”
