“But all my colleagues do.”

“Yes,” Vernon said with a sigh, “they do. Maybe you should have a talk with them about ramping up security in their homes.”

“I’ll do that. This is a wakeup call for everyone.” The thought of another of her officers being harmed because of their work was almost more than Sam could bear, especially after losing Detective Arnold so senselessly. They worked so hard to get justice for victims and to keep their community safe. But the risks were high and getting higher all the time.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Sam arrived home to find Nick in their bed with Aubrey and Alden snuggled up to him. “How are they?” she whispered.

“Finally asleep, but both are running fevers.”

She rested her hand on Alden’s forehead and was taken aback by the heat radiating from him. “Should we check in with Harry?”

“Already did. He was up here earlier and said he thinks it’s just a virus. He prescribed Tylenol and will check on them in the morning.”

“That’s another way the White House doesn’t suck—having a doctor in the house.”

“Right?”

“Should we move them to their room?”

“We can try.”

Sam took Alden, while Nick carried Aubrey. Thankfully, both children stayed asleep as they were tucked into the bed they still shared in Alden’s room, even though Aubrey had her own room. They preferred to be together, which was understandable after losing their parents.

“Rough night around here.” Nick rubbed the tension from his neck. “Aubrey was crying for her mommy, which broke my heart.”

When they were back in their suite, Sam put her arms around him.

He dropped his head to her shoulder. “Best thing to happen since the last time I was with you.”

“Thanks for stepping up for our Littles tonight. I’m sorry I wasn’t here.”

“You had important things to do.”

“I would rather have been here.”

“We know that, babe. We always know that.”

“Had a decent breakthrough in the case earlier.” Sam told him about realizing Dr. Blanchet was left-handed, and the gunpowder residue had been found on his right hand.

“Oh wow,” Nick said. “So what does that mean?”

“That the scene was probably staged to make it look like a murder-suicide. At least we know now that it’s worth pursuing other leads, but it puts us back at square one.”

“I have no doubt you’ll figure it out.”

“I’m glad you don’t.” She pulled back to look up at him. “How did things go downstairs today?”

“Just another day in paradise,” he said with the wry grin she loved so much.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m okay if you and the kids are okay. Tonight, our Littles are feeling poorly.”

“I should stay home with them tomorrow.”

“No, you need to go to work. Celia will be here with them, and she’s the next best thing.”
