“You’re the boss.”

“She said Patrol has been looking for him for a few weeks with no luck?”

“She did.”

“I think I’d like to call in Jesse Best and the U.S. Marshals.”

“That’s what I’d do.”

“Okay, then.”

“Okay, then,” Sam said. “Make the call.”

“Like… I should call him?”

“Yes, Freddie, you should call Jesse.”

“Will he take my call?”

Sam tried hard not to laugh at his wide-eyed expression. “Only one way to find out.” It was all she could do not to give him a push toward his cubicle to get him moving. Thankfully, he turned on his own and went to call Jesse.

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Captain Malone came into her office. “Heard you’ve got a promising new lead.”

Sam filled him in on what she knew so far. “Is that enough to get a warrant for his cell phone data?”

“Let’s give it a try. Write it up.”

Sam spent the next hour summarizing the information they’d gathered on Isaiah and then went back to edit her work as best she could before she sent it to Freddie for proofing. He was always willing to check her work, which she appreciated. Dyslexia tested her daily and always had her questioning herself when it came to written documents.

Freddie came to the door. “I just read your warrant request. What that kid has been through…”

“I know. It’s horrendous. What does it say about me that I feel for him even if it’s possible he killed six people?”

“Anyone with a heart would feel for what he’s endured.”

“This could be one of those instances where we solve the case but don’t feel good about it.”

“Yeah, for sure. Although, this is finally a motive that makes sense. He wanted to be part of them. They turned him away—again—and he decided that if he couldn’t be part of their family, they didn’t get to go on without him.”

“That makes more sense than a mother flipping out and killing six people because another kid was a better gymnast than hers.”

“Where are we with the warrant for the Cortez cell phone data?” Sam asked.

“Still waiting on the judge.”

“Could the judge please hurry the hell up?”

“No kidding. I’ll check the request for Isaiah’s phone data and submit it to Captain Malone.”

“He’s expecting it.”

“What should we do while we wait?”

“If I were running the investigation, I’d want to know everything there is to know about Isaiah Wiley, starting with the place he was living until a few weeks ago. But, of course, that’s up to you.”

“I was thinking about starting with the place where Wiley was living until he took off.”
