Liliana fell backward.

“Did you think you could call us racist animals in front of everyone and go on with your lives like that never happened?” Gia screamed at her. “Your husband is dead. Your children are dead. Now it’s your turn.”

Liliana’s screams echoed through the kitchen.

“Just do it, Pascal. I’ve had more than enough of her.”

He pointed the gun at Liliana and put a bullet in her forehead.

“Jesus,” Gonzo muttered.

“We need your phone, and we’ll have to put you in protective custody,” Freddie said, shaken to his core.

“Why?” Isaiah asked.

“Because we’ll need you to testify to what you witnessed.”

“Who were those people that killed my family?” Isaiah asked tearfully.

“Their daughter was in gymnastics with Eloise,” Freddie said, sickened by what he’d seen on the video. “They were angry about her success.”

“For real? That’s why they killed them?”

“Yeah,” Freddie said.

“That’s fucked up.”

“It sure is.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

By the time he had Isaiah placed in a safe house where he’d be kept until he testified and the paperwork completed on the latest development, it was three thirty in the morning.

He’d texted Sam earlier to let her know what had gone down with Isaiah and the video that would cement their case against the Cortezes.

Even after seeing it play out on the video, Freddie still couldn’t believe that massive jealousy and a public insult had led to the murders of six people, four of them children. It was possible that mental illness in Gia had played a part as well. Who knew what drove people to such a thing?

He thought about going home, but decided to crash on a sofa in the lobby for a couple of hours. After setting his alarm for seven so he could update Graciela Blanchet before the news went public, Freddie conked out.

He woke when someone shook him, opening his eyes to Sam standing over him.

“Has it come to this? Sleeping on the lobby sofa?”

“I finished at three thirty,” he said, sitting up to run a hand over his face and stretch out the kinks.

“You found Isaiah before the marshals had the chance to get started,” she said with pride in her voice and expression.

“I forgot to tell Jesse.”

“All set. I talked to him on the way in.”

“Thanks.”

“In case I forget to tell you, great job, Detective. You’ve made me very proud.”

He took the hand she offered him and let her help him up. “Which was the only goal.”

“Nah, justice for the Blanchets was the only goal.”
