Malone sat back in his chair with his hands crossed over his abdomen. “Spencer.”

“Among other things.”

“You think Cruz is ready to lead an investigation of this magnitude?”

“I do.”

“How will Gonzales feel about that?” Malone asked.

“He’d still be in charge. We’d give Cruz the lead as a training opportunity.”

“It’s fine with me. You know best what Cruz can handle, and I like the idea of giving him the chance to lead an investigation.”

“I’ll talk to them before I leave.”

“Do you know how much time you’re planning to take?”

“Not yet, but I’d keep you posted, if that’s all right. Might just be a day or two to reset.”

“Last I checked, you have something like three months of accrued leave on the books.”

“Is it that much? Even after I was out with my hip?”

Malone typed something into his computer. “One hundred and eight days.”

“Wow.”

“This info can be found on your pay stub, you know.”

“What pay stub?”

“The one that’s sent to your email every two weeks.”

“Oh. I’m a bit behind on my email.”

He grunted out a laugh. “No kidding. Really?”

“I’ll get caught up on that while I’m out.”

“Don’t worry about it. Take the time you need. The job will still be here when you’re ready to come back.”

“Have you ever felt numb to something that should be seriously upsetting? Such as four dead kids in their beds?”

“Occasionally. It happens.”

“What did you do about it?”

“Therapy helped.”

“Did you see Trulo?”

“I have. He’s damn good at what he does, as you know.”

“Yes, I do.”

“This job asks a lot of us, Sam. Sometimes it asks more than we’ve got to give it. When that happens, it’s right to ask for help and take a step back for a minute.”

“That’s what Trulo said.”
