She flipped her phone open and called him.

“Are you at the scene?” he asked.

“On my way. What do you know?”

“Two people were in the house when she got home.”

“How’d they get in? Don’t you have an alarm?”

“We do, but she must’ve forgotten to set it when she left this morning. That happens sometimes. Sam… I can’t lose them. I just can’t.”

She’d never heard him sound so undone. “You won’t.”

“I have no idea who these people are, but they’re asking for me.”

“Could be anyone tied to a million cases over your career. Don’t drive yourself crazy trying to figure out who. We’ll take care of it.”

“Please…”

“I love them, too, Avery. I’m on it.”

“Thank you. I’m two hours out.”

Sam could hear the fear in every word he said. “I’ll keep you posted.”

“Okay.”

She slapped the phone closed. “Brant!”

He came out of the office with two agents so young, one of them still had acne. “These are Agents Quigley and Wright. They’ll accompany you to Adams Morgan.”

“I want lights and sirens.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Quigley said.

She’d have them kill the sirens when they got close, but there could be no more delays. Her phone rang, and she took the call from Freddie.

“Did you get the word about Shelby?”

“I’m on my way.”

“I am, too. What do you know?”

“Only that there’re two people in the house with her.”

“I’ll see you there.”

Sam appreciated that he didn’t get emotional or ask her how she was feeling or anything else she’d find irritating at a time like this.

“Don’t hold my door,” Sam said to the agents. “Just get in so we can go.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

They left the White House grounds with lights and sirens flashing, which of course would attract media attention, not that she gave a flying fuck about that with Shelby’s and Noah’s lives on the line.

Tension had every muscle in her body tight to the point of pain as she imagined what Shelby was going through with her home under attack from strangers. This was every law enforcement officer’s greatest fear, that someone they encountered on the job would seek retribution in the most personal way possible.

If there was one good thing about Nick being president, it was that her family was protected by the finest security in the world.
