“Kill the sirens a few blocks out,” Sam told the agents.
“Yes, ma’am.”
She wanted to tell them to quit calling her that, but she knew that was a losing proposition. It’d taken weeks to scrub the ma’am out of Vernon and Jimmy.

Sam couldn’t think about him, or she’d lose her composure.
The entire block was lined with emergency vehicles and dark FBI sedans.
Without waiting for the agents, she got out of the SUV and sprinted toward the hub of the action, nearly colliding with Avery’s deputy, George Terrell. “What’ve we got?”
“Two individuals inside with Mrs. Hill and Noah. One of them has a Glock and is waving it around with no regard for who might be looking in the window.”
“Do we have snipers?”
“On the way.”
“Is that the plan?”
“It would be if we were certain there was only one gun.”
“What’s plan B?”
“We’re working on that now with your SWAT commander.”
“They’re very important to my family, too,” she reminded Terrell.
“Yes, I’m aware.”
“How can I help?”
“Due to your personal relationship, you should probably let us handle it.”
“Yes, I probably should, but I’d like to be involved. Please.”
She’d added thepleaseout of desperation.
“Sure. Whatever you want.”
“Thank you, George.” Sam followed him back to the group of law enforcement officers, who were huddled over a map of the townhouse.
“Mrs. Hill and her son are here,” one of the officers said, pointing. “Suspect number one, a male, is in the room with them and has the Glock pointed at them.”
Sam bit back a gasp.
“Suspect number two, a female, is in and out of the room. We haven’t been able to ascertain whether she’s armed.”
Sam wanted to scream at them to dosomething. Anything.
Freddie came up behind her and put his hands on her shoulders.
She wanted to shake him off but never would.
Over the next few minutes, the MPD officers and FBI agents agreed on a plan to go in through all windows and doors at the same time and neutralize the suspects.
“Can we warn her?” Sam asked, concerned for Shelby’s fragile state.
