Mrs. Gersh’s arrival gave him an excuse to get out of there while Gia got her kids settled.

On the porch, he gave Gonzo the one-minute signal.

“Not sure why the guy ran from us,” Gonzo said. “He’s not in the system.”

Interesting,Freddie thought. He’d left the scene of an accident and had gotten away with it, but he didn’t know that. He filled Gonzo in on what the wife had told him.

“Ah, that explains it. Funny that we never would’ve known about that if she hadn’t told us.”

When Gia came out of the house, Freddie got her settled in the back seat next to her husband.

“What’s this about, Pascal?” she asked tearfully. “And why are you bleeding?”

“These cops attacked me.”

“Don’t forget to mention the part where you ran from us,” Gonzo said as he pulled the car into traffic.

“We want a lawyer,” Pascal said.

“Who would you like us to call for you?” Freddie asked him.

“How should I know? I’ve never needed one before.”

“I’ll notify the public defender’s office, but they’re pretty backed up. It’s apt to be tomorrow or the next day before they can get to you.”

“We can’t wait that long!” Gia said. “We have children.”

“I’m sorry,” Freddie said, “but once you’ve requested an attorney, we can’t speak to you in any official capacity until you’re represented. Should I call the public defender’s office?”

“No!” Gia said. “We haven’t done anything. We have nothing to hide.”

“If you rescind your request for an attorney,” Freddie said, “hopefully we can get this taken care of sooner rather than later.”

The comment was met with a stony silence.

“Pascal! Tell them we don’t need a lawyer. We haven’t done anything!”

“There was the accident…”

“That’s not what this is about,” Freddie said.

“Then what?” Gia asked. “What do you want with us?”

“We’ll talk about that back at headquarters,” Freddie said. “If you rescind your request for an attorney.”

“Fine,” Pascal said. “No lawyer.”

“Pascal—”

“Shut up, Gia.”

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

They passed the rest of the ride in silence. When they arrived at HQ, they brought the couple in through the morgue entrance and straight to an interrogation room.

Freddie started the recorder in the center of the table. “Detective Cruz and Sergeant Gonzales with Pascal and Gia Cortez in reference to the Blanchet case.”

Gia nearly levitated out of her seat. “We had nothing to do with that! We barely knew them!”
