Freddie wondered if she was Lacey.

The inside door opened to reveal a dark-haired woman with purple circles under her eyes.

Freddie showed her his badge.

She opened the storm door.

“Gia Cortez?”

“Yes, that’s me.”

“I’m going to need you to come downtown with me, my partner and your husband, who’s in our custody.”

“What’s this about?” she asked, her eyes rounding with shock.

“We’ll talk about it when we get there.”

“I can’t leave my children home alone.”

“Is there someone you can call to stay with them?”

“I… Um… I can ask my neighbor.”

“Why don’t you do that?”

When she started to walk away, Freddie followed her into the kitchen, where she placed the call to the neighbor, asking her to come stay with the kids.

“I’m not sure how long I’ll be gone,” she said with a wary glance at Freddie. “Can you come now?” After a pause, she said, “Thank you so much.” She ended the call. “She’ll be here in a minute.”

“Great.”

“Am I under arrest?”

“Have you committed a crime?”

“No!”

“Why did your husband run from us?”

“He, um… I’m not sure.”

Freddie could tell she was lying. “It’ll take us all of five minutes to find out why he ran, so you could save us that time by just telling me.”

“There might be a warrant for his arrest.”

“For what?”

“He… He left the scene of an accident.”

“Why did he do that?”

“Because our insurance had lapsed, and he was afraid of getting arrested.” As her eyes filled, she looked away from him. “We’ve had some financial issues.”

“Mommy, what’s wrong?” The girl who’d answered the door came into the kitchen.

Gia reached for her. “Nothing, honey. Mommy and Daddy have to go take care of something. We’ll be back in a little bit. Mrs. Gersh is going to come stay with you and the boys.”

The girl gave Freddie a wary glance.
