I decide to shoot my mom a text when we pack into Peyton’s fancy SUV.

Hey mom. I wanted to talk to you about something.

MOM

Of course, honey. I can’t talk on the phone right now because I’m at work.

That’s fine. But do you remember that money you called me about?

MOM

Yes. I still can’t thank you enough for it.

Well… that wasn’t from me.

MOM

Who was it from? That’s a lot of money to not be from you.

I’m almost positive it was from Marc.

I watch as the bubble pops up that tells me she’s typing, but it goes away when an incoming call comes from her.

“I thought you couldn’t talk?” I laugh.

“Avery!” she shrieks on the phone.

I pull the phone away from my ear the second she does. “Mom, I think you just blew out my ear drum.”

A series of more screams come from inside the car. Kali, Peyton and Emiline all say their hello’s to her and I switch to speaker so she can say hello to them back.

“Anyway…”

“What makes you think it was him, honey?”

“I asked Peyton about it and she said it wasn’t her. Who else could it have been?”

“Wow.”

“I know.”

There’s a pause on the line before she says, “He loves you.”

“Mom.” I sigh sympathetically. “Don’t.”

“He does. And you should allow him to love you. Not because of the money. But because of what he did for me. Him bringing me down there for you to be able to see me alone, just proves that he cares aboutyou, and the peopleyoucare about. That speaks volumes.”

“I know.”

“Do you? Because from my end, you don’t sound so sure.”

“I think I do, Mom. Something is there but I don’t know how to move forward with the feelings.”

“She’s going away with him this weekend, Jan,” Peyton yells from the front seat, loud enough so that she hears her over the phone.

“That’s wonderful!” I can feel my mom smiling through the phone.

“I’m taking it one step at a time, mom. I don’t want to screw this up.”
