“You can never screw this up.” My mom sighs. “I don’t want you to follow in my footsteps. I want you to know that. All I’ve ever wanted was for you to walk your own path and go even farther than I could ever dream. So far… you’ve done that.”

A tear threatens to spill over. Feelingthingshas turned me into the biggest sap.

“Don’t let the fear of what your father did to me stop you. Go after what your heart truly wants.”

“Thanks, Mom. I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

We end the call and I slump back in my seat. Staring at my phone, my mind spins with everything the girls said at brunch and what mom just said on the phone.

Go after what your heart truly wants.

I think my heart truly wants Marc Ford.

Have you ever been so excited for something that you find yourself pacing your home waiting for the hands on the clock to move just so you can go to whatever has you feeling that way?

That was me this morning. The anticipation of seeing Avery again had me walking around with a giant smile plastered on my face.

I don’t know what’s shifted between us, but I can confidently say I’m so far gone for her. I mean, I almost spilled the wordsI love youto her the night she was at the penthouse. But I don’t think that’s what this is… not yet. We were in the heat of the moment with each other, I think anyone would’ve almost spilled it after the greatest sex of someone's life.

I find myself wanting to be around her, to kiss her, have my hands on her, and craving to see her smile.

She’s spun my whole world around.

When I finally picked her up earlier, she answered the door wearing black leggings that had a flannel shirt wrapped around her waist, and a white tank top that was cut just enough to show her toned midsection. Her hair was braided into a messy side braid, topped with a baseball cap that readNBU. Looks like a college logo, but I’ve never heard of it.

She then leapt into my arms and kissed me. As if she does it every day. I wrapped my arms around her and kissed her back. It wasn’t the most explosive kiss I’ve ever had with her, but it erupted something inside of me. A desire to say fuck this fake shit, this weekend will be all real. All us.

But I decide to tread lightly, because I’ve come to learn a lot about Avery and who she is as a person. Opening up to someone will not be easy for her. Part of caring for someone so much is allowing them that time to process their feelings until they’re ready.

The ride to the mountains has been effortless. We talked about the most mundane things. From her latest episode ofFriendsto trying a new restaurant in the city that Oliver says we need to go to. Everything with her is just so carefree.

The GPS interrupts my thoughts when it says, “Your destination is on the left.”

“Wow.” Avery sits up from the passenger seat to look at the cabin out the window. “That isnota cabin. That’s a full mansion in the woods.”

My eyes land on the home and it’s truly beautiful.

However, it’s not quite a mansion. The driveway has two dirt road entrances that are in the shape of a horseshoe. The house is perched on a curve in the mountain, showing that it’s a three story home. You can see all the land, and I notice the giant pond behind the house, and a massive two car garage off to the side of the property. It has one large opening that would be where someone would park an RV for their stay, and the other is large enough for a truck to fit in.

“This place is stunning,” I say as I put the car into park.

“It really is.”

“Bill was right about one thing, this will be a great spot for a weekend away from the busy city. There isn’t a neighbor in sight.”

“What do you expect? We’re out in the middle of nowhere.”

“Are you going to survive, Princess?”

“The chances are slim.” She laughs.

God, her laugh is the greatest sound. My head snaps in her direction the second the sounds left her mouth. I can feel my face morph into lust as I watch her chuckle in the seat next to me staring out the front window. As if she can feel me looking, she twists her head until she’s looking right at me.

“What’s that look for?” She begins to wipe her face. “Do I have something on my face?”

“No.” I shake my head, smile growing wider. “You don’t.”
