I fought all morning that day to hone my emotions so Marc didn’t see me lose it. Except when I stopped on my way in to grab a bag of chips, the cafe downstairs didn’t have any salt & vinegar chips. Of course, The ONE time I want them is the ONLY time they don’t have them.

Cue tears I didn’t ask for.

Don’t get me started on the special heating pad he got me that’s perfectly designed for period cramps. Like, it has a belt that wraps around my waist. How have I been a female for twenty-seven years and didn’t know these existed?

All of this doesnothelp my case of not feeling things for this man. Talk about swoon.

Heading back into my closet, I decide on a casual summer dress. Now that Aunt Flo went back into her cave for the month, I feel less bloated and more like myself. The dress is a flowy deep maroon colored dress with short sleeves. Since this is dinner with his boss, I want to keep it casual and respectful.

I rarely ever wear my hair down so tonight I decide to let it down with its long, natural waves. My hair isn’t straight but it’s also not curly. It’s got the perfect amount of natural wave to it that works for this dress and occasion.

I glance at the clock and see that Marc should be here in the next fifteen minutes, but the doorbell rings just as I glance down.

There is no way Marc is fifteen minutes early. I assume it’s yet another package of books that Kali ordered online.

When I answer the door, I’m shocked to see Marc standing there.

“Missed me so much that you had to show up fifteen minutes early, boss man?”

I open the door without looking at him and retreat to the kitchen.

Marc gives me no response, but I hear the door close behind him.

As soon as I turn to look at him, all my affirmations that I chanted not long ago ofI can do thisare thrown out the window.

Marc stands there looking suave as ever with his hands tucked in the pockets of a pair of black dress pants. He’s wearing a light blue button down that has a black suit jacket to cover it. He decided on no tie which is so on brand for him. His dark chocolate brown hair is the perfect mix of sexy and sophisticated mess. Purposely unruly as if he runs his fingers through it several times during the day. The things I would do just to be able to run my hands through it.

I tell myself to stop thinking about that, but my eyes scan his body slowly from bottom to top. The world might as well have stopped spinning right then and there. I think my mouth is hung open, but I don’t have the right mind to bring my lips back together. I can’t help but pat myself on the back for deciding to put on panties with this dress.

“Are you checking me out?” his voice cuts through my own thoughts.

“Do you want the truth or a lie?”

“Obviously I want the truth, Avery.”

I swallow a lump that formed in my throat, feeling dryer than the Sahara Desert all of a sudden. How did that happen?

“You’re making it very hard to look away right now,” I admit.

The signature smirk forms on his face, as his gaze drops to the floor, and he shakes his head. My eyes never leave him as he walks over to meet me in the kitchen.

He’s now standing directly in front of me, barely an inch away, which forced my head to lift up to meet his intense stare. I think I’ve stopped breathing, but I can’t tell.

I might actually pass out and die from lack of oxygen to the brain.

Cause of death: the man standing in front of me.

Both of his hands come up to brush my hair flowing down my chest to behind my shoulders so it all lays on my back. The light brush of his knuckles on my shoulder as he does it makes me feel weak in the knees and I swear if I didn’t have bones holding me up, I’d be a puddle at his feet.

“Now you know how I feel,” he says. Barely above a whisper.

There is no one else here.

This is all Marc Ford and his charm.

God dammit.

“We should go.” I take a step back from this bubble he has me trapped in, allowing myself to breathe again. “You know, before we’re late and all.”
