“You’re in for a treat!”

“I would like to introduce you to my fiancé, Avery.” His damn hand is on the small of my back again.

“It’s so lovely to meet you, Avery.” She wraps her arms around me for a hug.

I don’t immediately hug her back, my arms are plastered to my sides at this almost awkward encounter. Hugging isn’t my favorite thing in the world. Anyone close to me will tell you all about that too.

My eyes meet Marc and he gives methe eyetelling me that it’s rude to not hug back. I roll my eyes at him as my arms reach up to gently pat her back.

“It’s so nice to meet you too,” I finally reply back to her.

She releases me from her hold and takes a step back as her eyes bounce back and forth between Marc and I. Shit… did I already blow this?

I shuffle to the side to wedge myself under Marc's arm. As if he can sense my uncertainty, he wraps his arm around my shoulders and tugs me tight into him.

How am I just getting a whiff of his scent right now? I just spent an hour in the car with him and didn’t notice anything. Now that he has me close to his chest, pressed against him, I’m hit with the aroma of his rich, masculine cologne. He smells like he belongs on a page of aGiorgio Armanimagazine ad.

“Come in. Come in.” Bill pulls me out of my thoughts. “Let’s get you two something to drink.”

We follow closely behind them as they guide us into the kitchen. If that’s even what you want to call it. This isn’t a kitchen… it's almost double the size of my apartment.

I scan the room and notice dozens of cabinets from the floor to the tall ceilings. I’m sure they need a ladder of sorts to get to the stuff high up at the top. It’s probably where they put stuff that they only use once every six months. That’s what I would do.

There isn't one, but two islands in the middle of the room. Each one with four bar stools on them. There’s a huge farmhouse sink under the window overlooking the backyard. Okay, maybethatwould be on my vision board if I had one.

I have never in my life seen something of this magnitude as far as a kitchen goes.

“What can I get you guys to drink?” Bill asks.

“We’re fine with whatever,” Marc answers for us.

“We have whiskey and wine on hand. Both red and white.”

“I’ll have a whiskey,” Marc says. “What about you, baby?”

I never thought I would be the girl who likes being called that. I can’t stand it, if I’m being honest. The way he just so casually called mebabywithout skipping a beat has my thighs clenching together though.

“I’ll have a glass of white, please.”

It’s almost as if Marc can sense the awkward tension that’s currently filling the kitchen. It’s not something I believe Bill and Cathy might pick up on, but the two of us know this is fake. I think our subconscious thoughts are equally nervous to make sure that they don’t know it.

He makes his way over to me on the opposite side of the island that separates us right now to stand directly next to me. His body hovers close enough to me that the hairs of his arm brush over mine. It’s barely a touch but the electrical current coursing through me is enough to make me think his hands were all over my body.

“How was the drive in?” Bill asks.

“It wasn’t bad at all.” Marc shakes his head. “We hit a little bit of traffic but not enough to set us back at all. Thankfully we made it on time.”

“I was surprised at that.” Bill laughs.

“See, babe.” I laugh with Bill. “I’m not the only one who notices you’re late for everything.”

I watch as uneasiness washes over his face.

I wish I could take back my words. Not for my sake, but for his.

How is Bill going to trust him to run the company when he’s not on time for anything?

“Thankfully,” I spit out quickly in an attempt to save his ass. “You’re only ever on time for the things that really matter to you.” I shift my attention to Bill. “When we first started dating, he was twenty minutes early to pick me up for our date. My best friend is actually dating his brother, and from what I understood, he was late for just about everything they always planned. I guess something shifted when we first got together, and ever since, he’s been on time for everything.”
