What I did not expect was for us to end up kissing.

My god… what a kiss.

Never in my life have sparks flown the way they did when I kissed her. It wasn’t planned. I didn’t want to break the simple rule she put in place. But it’s been getting harder and harder to deny how much I wanted her. This attraction we have towards each otherneededto be explored.

We didn’t so much as talk about whatever that was. Fred came to pick her up, and she went back to her apartment without a passing glance. Stupid me forgot that she used some paid time off for Monday and Tuesday to attend a couple of appointments with Peyton for some wedding things, so we still haven’t had the chance to discuss anything.

“Is everything okay?” Bill asks. “Is Avery still sick?”

“She’s better now. A stomach bug or some type of food poisoning wiped her out. We’re going with the latter since no one else seemed to get sick from being around her.”

“I’m glad she’s alright. Poor Cathy was so worried about her when we left. Couldn’t get Avery’s pale white face out of her mind for the entire night.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat, because if he only knew how worriedIwas that night.

“I’m sorry we worried you.”

“Just happy to hear she’s better now. Now tell me how last week went in your territories.”

“Yes, sir. We did really well. Summer is always a busy time for us, as you know. Our Staten Island office is showing really good numbers. We’ve even expanded a little more doing big residential properties in that territory. There’s a guy over there who was hired strictly for that, and it’s been a game changer. Business is booming.”

“That’s what I like to hear.” I can practically feel the smile on his face. “You’re a smart man, Marc. You make wise business moves and I know that the future of this company will be in great hands.”

My chest tightens at his words. It’s almost as if he just handed me the keys to the company. I stay silent because I’m not entirely sure what to respond to that with. I want to sayThank youand ask what it all means.

He continues to discuss some other business aspects of things that go in one ear and out the other because I'm still stewing over the fact that he actually said the company would be in great hands. I reply, but I can’t even tell you what I said back to him for any of this exchange.

“I’ve been meaning to ask you.” he cuts my thoughts off. “The first week in August. You’re taking the weekend off.”

“I don’t work the weeke—”

“Don’t tell me you don’t. You work seven days a week. I’m no fool, Marc.”

He’s no fool. Except I’ve been fooling him since last December. Showing him a fake relationship to earn this company.Fuck. Me.

“I know you’re not, sir. What do you have planned?”

“I want to do something relaxing. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. I figured we would head to my cabin up in the mountains for the weekend.”

“The mountains?”

“Yeah, I own a house in the Catskills. It’s about a two-hour drive from here.

“That sounds like a lot of fun. I will just have to run it by Avery to make sure she can get off work.”

Lies. Lies. Lies.

Obviously she’s going.I’mher boss.

“Excellent,” he exclaims. “Todd and Vivian are already good to go. Just waiting on you two kids.”

Todd. Vivian. My blood runs cold.

Great. This isn’t just a trip for the four of us.

“I’m sure we’ll be good to go.” I barely get the words out because my throat is closing in on me. “I’ll touch base this afternoon.”

“Great. Talk to you then.” And the line goes dead.
