"Do you really have to leave after this is over?" His voice sounded hoarse, even to him.

"Casper called me today and said he had something lined up. I'm to let him know when I believe I'll be wrapping up here."

"Do you want to?"

She turned her head to look at him. He met her gaze. "Go?"

"Yes."

She bit her bottom lip and that was enticing as fuck. She was enticing as fuck.

She inhaled deeply. It was impossible not to watch her chest rise and fall. "I don't think so."

He swallowed. There was that. "Then why do it?"

"What else am I supposed to do? I can't only eat cookies for a living."

"What living expenses do you have?"

He saw her eyes well with tears. "Thank you for pointing out what a loser I am. I have nothing. Are you happy? I am nothing but a workhorse for others. I've only just begun to start thinking about me. Until I know what else is available to me, I don't have anything."

A shiny silvery tear slid down her cheek and he reached out and swiped it away with the back of his forefinger. "I'm sorry. I absolutely did not mean to make you cry. I also don't think you're a loser. Just the opposite. But how will you have the time to figure out what you want to do when you're running from job to job?"

She sniffed daintily. He almost chuckled it was so cute. She huffed out a breath. "I don't know."

He reached over and laid his hand on her shoulder. "Hey. Look at me."

Her head slowly turned, her glistening eyes looked surreal in the darkness of the night, with the outside lights capturing the moisture. "You must have a ton of vacation time built up. Take a few weeks. Stay here. You can stay with me. We'll see what we learn about who Everleigh Hayes is."

She swallowed. "That'll just make it harder to leave."

"Because you like me?"

"Yes." It was a whisper.

"I like you too. I mean so much more than like you. I like Lara. I really like you."

She chuckled. "I really like you too." She swiped at her eyes. “That sounded rather grade school.”

They both chuckled. He finally added, “I suppose it did. But my feelings are more than any grade-school boy has ever had for a girl.”

He leaned over the console, slowly, his left hand held the side of her head and his lips touched hers. Softly, ever so softly. He brushed little kisses on her lips. They felt good together. Her lips against his was like a balm. He kissed her longer. Holding his lips to hers. Softly. His tongue slowly swiped across her lips and hers parted. He slid his tongue along hers, swirling and tasting her. The wine she had at dinner mixed with her perfume was like a drug. His head tilted to the side and their lips fit together perfectly as their tongues danced a slow, smooth rhythm. “Tennessee Whisky.” Sultry. Heavenly.

He reluctantly pulled back and stared into her eyes. "That was fantastic."

"Yeah. Wow." She whispered.

He grinned. "I've thought about doing that a lot."

Her lips turned up in a breathtaking smile. "Me too."

Headlights swooped around the truck and he turned to watch an older truck slowly cruise the parking lot. It didn't appear to be looking for a parking spot, there were several to choose from. Slowly, it pulled into the spot next to Everleigh's SUV. Her brows furrowed as the truck parked.

Two men got out of the truck and walked around Everleigh's SUV. Her hand reached for the door handle, and he reached his arm out and grabbed her left hand. "Don't."

"But that's my car."

"I know. But you can't approach them. They have weapons."
