After that incident, he stayed away from me but tracked my every move.

I continued to keep an eye on Gabby and be there for her as a friend as much as she’d let me. But then she revealed she was pregnant.

My dad’s campaign was all about pro-life. He didn’t trust her to get an abortion on her own, and he couldn’t be the one to take her. So he flew them out to Mexico.

Before their flight, Gabby gave me all her records as proof in the event something happened. She knew all too well how powerful my dad was, and there was no running away. Between my father and her dad being a judge, she would’ve been found and returned within twenty-four hours. She promised to end the affair after the procedure, leave for college, and never return. Though I wanted to believe her, that she wasn’t being used against her own free will, I wasn’t sure if she’d ever tell me the full truth. All I knew was that she needed to escape this place.

I swore I’d leave too, but unlike Gabby, I was leaving behind the love of my life to escape my version of hell.

My father deserves more than humiliation and being ostracized. He deserves prosecution for his crimes and Gabby’s death. I want the world to know what a sleazebag he is and what he did to a judge’s daughter. A despicable man like him doesn’t deserve to walk the streets a free man ever again.

And once they bring him in for questioning and arrest him, every news station in Texas will have the details on what he’s being accused of. Because we aren’t only sending this information to the judge. Once he’s in custody, the video footage and audio recordings will be mailed to every news station in Texas.

Laney didn’t know the details of Gabby’s death, only that the affair was happening. I was too ashamed to tell her after she’d told me to tell the authorities.

The police worshipped my father and would’ve laughed in my face.

I hate that Gabby died before I could tell the world what my dad did to her.

When I went to Laney with my plan to finally expose him, I told her everything I hadn’t before. Howie was the only other person who knew the full truth and had access to my account.

After Gabby came home from her forced abortion in Mexico, she got sick and was too embarrassed to go to the hospital. I begged her to, worried she had an infection or internal bleeding. She had both.

During her autopsy, it was discovered she’d had the procedure, but there were no local medical records to confirm. There was no evidence to prove she was involved with my dad since he used a burner phone, and they were discreet in their messages. My dad continued to live freely, pretending he knew nothing about Gabby Carmichael’s death, and I lived in fear that he’d kill me if I ever spoke up.

ONE DAY AGO

“My inside sources tell me they’re issuing his warrant first thing Monday mornin’,” Shane tells me when I call him on my afternoon break.

That’s in two days.

Laney and Serena move the following day, and I’ll have my girls back with me safe and sound.

“Thank God. I wanna see him in handcuffs.”

“Soon enough, I’m sure. Judge Carmichael wants justice, especially since the ten-year anniversary of her death was a few months ago. He’s pushin’ the district attorney to make this big. They’re gonna make an example out of him.”

“Fuck yes.” This is better than I’d hoped.

“Why’re they waitin’ till Monday then? Can’t they go after him now?”

“They need to verify all the evidence first, but it’s solid enough to be movin’ this fast, so be happy about that.”

I blow out a breath. “Fine, you’re right.”

“I’m sure you’ll see him in an orange jumpsuit soon enough.” He cackles.

We’ve already talked about the potential of me being a key witness, and if that’s what it takes to ensure my dad never goes free, I’ll do it.

“I’d rather the last time I see him be in a coroner’s office,” I murmur. “Assumin’ he doesn’t try to take me down with him.”

“Expert witnesses will prove the evidence is legit for the jury,” he reassures me. “Assumin’ it gets that far. No doubt the defense will cross-examine you pretty hard. I wouldn’t be shocked if they try to make you the bad one for withholdin’ evidence ten years ago. And if they do, we’ll fight back and make a deal.”

That scared kid from a decade ago who hesitated to do the right thing due to the possible consequences isn’t fearing his father’s wrath any longer. I won’t let Gabby’s memory be stained or her death be in vain.

“Well...I know a judge who owes me one.” I shrug, and Shane snorts.

I know it won’t be that easy. Things will get ugly, but I’ll do whatever needs to be done to finish my father off for good.
