She could literally hear him groan.

“They put a bag over my head and stuffed me into the trunk of a car and knocked me out. I don’t know how long I was out, but I’m in some cheap ass hotel. I’m scared, Mischa. There’s a guy sitting on the edge of the bed with a really big gun.”

“I know you’re afraid, little wolf, but I need you to stay calm and conscious. Can you do that for me?”

She heard not only his words, but the emotion behind them. Yes, he was trying to soothe her, but he was also reminding her she was strong. Even so, she had no idea where she was or how the hell she was going to save herself.

“Steady, little wolf. The gun is not good, but it’s also not the end of the world. As long as the bullets aren’t tipped in silver, you should be fine.”

“Seriously? You’re going to joke about something like that?”

“I got you to quit being frightened, didn’t I? I need you to be calm. I can track you through the link, but having your fear shoved down my throat makes it difficult. I will find you. All you need to do is stay alive.”

“Oh, is that all,” she said sarcastically.

“Yes, that’s it. But never forget you are not alone.”

“I know you’re coming, but…”

“You are not alone there. Remember you are a dire wolf. One of the most powerful predators in the world dwells within you. You should be able to feel her, lurking just out of sight, waiting for you to call her forward. Can you feel her?”

Simone realized that the other voice, the other calm, soothing voice that had been inside her head was just that—her inner wolf longing to come out. She focused inward and could see the distinct outline of an enormous dire wolf, prowling and pacing along the fringes of her mind.

“She’s there all right, and she’s pissed. I think maybe I should take her out for a little stroll.”

Mischa chuckled.

“All in good time, little wolf. All in good time. If you need her, just call to her and she will run towards you and leap into the forefront of your brain. You will feel a gentle swirling all around you accompanied by thunder, lightning, and shards of light. If and when you need her to recede, tell her to relinquish control and she should give it.”

From the recesses of her mind, she could see her dire wolf begin to trot, growling low in her throat. There was no weakness there; no uncertainty; only a desire to be set free and to take on those who threatened them.

The door to the hotel room burst open and two additional men came inside before slamming it shut behind them. Mischa must have felt her adrenaline spike.

“What’s happening?” he demanded.

She explained, trying to soothe both her mate and her inner beast.

“Find out who they are, what they want. Talk to them and do not allow your she-wolf to take control.”

“Um, excuse me? Would anyone care to tell me where we are, why you grabbed me, or what your plans are?”

All three men stared at her as if she’d grown a second head.

One of the men walked over to her, backhanding her and making her head snap to one side. “Shut up bitch,” he sneered in heavily accented Russian.

“Fuck,” said Mischa. “These guys are dangerous and are looking for payback. We had a deal go sideways when I was in Italy. They thought they were buying women; we were selling arms. We have nothing to do with human trafficking.”

“How far are you?”

“Maybe four minutes.”

Too long, she thought to herself. All three men were standing at the foot of the bed, their trousers tented from fairly impressive erections. Each of the men was stroking the front of his fly.

“Your man say he sell us whores; instead, they bring us guns. We don’t need guns. We need whores. First to use and then to sell. There are people looking for you. They will pay.”

“I’m sure they will want to know I wasn’t harmed or damaged,” she offered.

“What do they care? It doesn’t matter. We’re going to kill you. Maybe we offer to fuck you to death for them.”
