“That might not be a good idea. He’s mated to Ava’s best friend. I don’t think he hides much from her.” Kerian washes his hands.

“True. So we try on our own. If we can’t get what we need, we go to him,” I decide. I finish cleaning off my face and move to my chest.

“Agreed.”

“How should we proceed? If it were up to me, we would handcuff her to the bed until she agrees to be ours,” I smirk.

“Let’s keep that plan for later. Right now, we act normal. Nothing has changed. Our feelings are the same. She expects us to pull back. We go to her work, as planned, take her to lunch, and convince her to talk to us.” He leans back on the counter. We share a look of determination.

I nod, “I am hungry, though. Do you think we can get her to eat with us?”

“We can try.”

Unfortunately, Ava didn’t eat with us. She breezed by us, barely stopping to say goodbye. She avoided our probing gaze. We showed up at her work to take her to lunch. No Ava. Her co-workers gave us a message. She was eating with Serenity. We called Ryker to confirm, to make sure she didn’t do something stupid like leave town.

We weren’t giving up, though. Tonight we would show up at her house with supper.

I was immersing myself in work. I was underneath a Charger. A beautiful car, when my phone rings. Hoping it’s Ava calling, I hurry to answer. The number is unknown. A chill travels down my spine.

“River,” I answered.

“My boy, long time.”

I don’t say anything as I make my way out to the street. Kerian doesn’t need to hear what my uncle will say.

“Don’t call me that,” I growl. “I was never your boy.”

“I’m hurt. After all the things I did for you?” I hear the smirk in his voice.

“Why are you calling me?” I demand.

“I can’t call my favorite nephew?” he says, offended.

“No. Our relationship, if you can call it that, died a long time ago.”

“Come on, aren’t you curious about what I’m up to lately?” he asks with glee.

“It can’t be anything good,” I say, sick. There has to be a reason he is calling me. All these years he has left me alone—I have to know his motivation.

“It depends on your definition of good. What would you say to start the games up again?”

“I killed all of your hunters. All of the sick fucks working with you,” I say. I dream about that night—the glorious feeling of vengeance.

“You and that ungrateful dragon, I remember,” he says bitterly.

“You tortured him. What did you expect?”

“No matter, you know I can always find people interested in participating again.”

“Why are you calling to tell me this? I finished my time and went out in a blaze of glory. Are you that foolish to try to reel me in again? I’m not a kid anymore. You’ll find it’s harder to persuade me now,” I say, bile rising in my throat.

“Probably. But I heard a rumor. Is it true you found your mate?”

My wolf howls. My claws push through my fingers. “Who told you that rumor?” I try to control my breathing. I want a name—the name of the person I will kill.

“I remember that temper of yours. I won’t give up the source. She’s human?”
