I walk to the side of the building, away from traffic. If I change suddenly, the fewer people that see, the better.

“Why do you care?” I force through gritted teeth.

“I want to hear about your life now. Are you going to change her?”

“Are you still jealous that you were skipped over in the shifter gene pool?” I relish his fury. He was adopted. My grandmother’s best friend died, and she took him in.

“I didn’t want to be a shifter,” he disagrees.

I have heard the longing in his voice before, though. “You did. That’s why you started the games. You wanted what we all had. The power. The healing,” I taunt.

“Fuck you, you little shit,” he shouts. “You got lucky when you escaped. You would be dead now if not.”

“Probably. But I got older and stronger and made friends with the other participants. Powerful allies.”

“Not this time.” I hear screams in the background. “You see, we are determined to do it right this time. We have already found game changers. Don’t you miss the only family you have left? Don’t you think it is time for you to take your rightful place? You might want to keep an eye on that pretty mate of yours. She won’t fare as well in the forest as a human,” he says and hangs up.

I punch the brick wall until my fist is broken and bloody again. My harsh breath rings through the street. Motherfucker. I thought it was over. I hoped it was over. When I killed everyone, my uncle escaped. I haven’t been able to find him since. Not like I tried too hard. I just wanted to forget.

I pull up Serenity’s number.

“River, yes, she is with me,” she laughs.

“Are you telling the truth?” I say urgently.

She hears the severe tone of my voice and sobers. “She is, I swear. What’s going on?”

“I need you to do me a favor. Stay with her. Get Ryker to stay with her until Kerian and I get there. Her life is on the line.”

“River?” she whispers.

“Please trust me. I wouldn’t lie about this. I will explain later,” I beg.

“Of course, I’ll stay with her. I’ll call Ryker.”

“Thanks, Serenity.” I hung up.

I stared at my phone, debating on the call I needed to make and never wanted to make again.

I swallow thickly when I find his name.

“River,” he grumbles. “This can’t be good news.”

“He’s starting the games again. It sounds like he already is breaking them in.”

“Hmm…he called?”

“Yes, to taunt me. I found my mate.”

“Right,” he pauses, and then asks, “human?”

“Yes, we met a few days ago,” I growl.

“He has spies,” he states.

“Apparently.”

“He found a new location. He found new crews.”
