Ava lets out a gasp before she can stop it. She covers her mouth and looks at me with guilt.

I try to look at my friend objectively.

His chest is bare and covered in tattoos from his neck to where they disappear into his jeans. Not one inch of skin without color. He’s the only person I know that has more than me. He has light blonde hair with gold streaks running through it down to his shoulders. It’s wavy and wild. He has gold eyes. He is a gold dragon; it makes sense. He’s bigger than me, but not as big as Kerian. He keeps himself in shape. He rarely smiles, but a twitch works at the corner of his mouth.

I guess women would think he is good-looking. I’ve heard many refer to him as angelic.

Kerian starts to walk over to shut off the alarm when it suddenly stops.

“I see you’ve learned a few tricks,” I say dryly.

“I did. Are you impressed?”

I shrug. “I’ve seen better.” We stare at each other, then move at the same time. I grab him by the back of the neck and touch my head to his while he does the same. We came out of hell together, bent but not broken. “Why did you come?” I ask, pulling back.

“I knew you would let your pride get in the way of asking for help,” he says simply.

“Maybe I’ve changed,” I point out.

He snorts. “Not likely.”

“Yeah, you’re right.” I motion to Kerian and Ava, letting us have our moment. “This is Kerian, my brother, and Ava, our mate.”

“Kerian.” He holds his hand out. “It’s nice to meet the man he talked about so much.”

Kerian looks at me, surprised, taking Bishop’s hand. “Nice to meet you.”

“Ava, I’m honored to meet you. River deserves nothing less.” He kisses her hand. I expect her to swoon and wave a handkerchief.

“I’m grateful he had a friend to rely on.” She pulls her hand back, rubbing it, moving closer to Kerian. Bishop has that effect on people.

“I feel the same.” He nods at me. “Sorry to come in the middle of the night. I’m less likely to be spotted flying in the dark.”

“It’s fine. Your sister didn’t come with you?” I ask.

“No, I didn’t want to bring her anywhere close to your uncle again. She’s somewhere safe, where he can’t reach her.”

“I’m sure she wasn’t eager to face him again, either,” I say, gesturing to the living room. “Take a seat. How about some water?” I ask. I remember how thirsty he gets after flying.

“That would be great.”

“I’ll get it,” Ava offers.

“She’s beautiful,” Bishop whispers as she walks to the kitchen.

“She is. She was a surprise,” I say, sharing a look with Kerian.

“A good one,” Kerian says.

“I bet,” Bishop murmurs.

“How long are you staying?” I ask.

“As long as it takes to kill him.”

“Do you have a place to stay?” Kerian asks.

“No, not yet. I didn’t make a plan before taking off.”
