“Are you excited about the prospect of being a wolf?” Harmony asks.

The words burst out of me. “I’m fucking terrified.”

Chapter Twenty-Five

Ava

I stand up when they gasp. “They want to turn me into an animal,” I screech. “I get kidnapped, caged, tormented, and hunted. I had to kill a man. I actually killed him! My body hurts from head to toe. I climbed a tree to hide from men with guns. Who does that?” I ask, looking at them. “I did. I watched River, as a wolf, eat a human being. He was my boss and a total dick, but still.”

“I think it’s all catching up to her,” Harmony whispers.

“Let her work through it,” Penny whispers back and then eats a handful of popcorn.

“My feet hurt like a bitch. I cried my eyes out in the shower. Oh, I forgot, I met a lion and saw a dragon. A dragon.” I wave my arms over my head. “He was huge and beautiful. What life am I living? I swore I wouldn’t date shifters anymore. Then you,” I point at Harmony, “sent me to your brother, who carried me into his office over his shoulder. Who does that? He tells me to stay. Like I was going to listen. They just wouldn’t give up. They pushed and pushed.”

“That must have been hot,” Penny says; I glare at her. “What? I’m saying if a hot man threw me over his shoulder, I wouldn’t protest.”

“Me either,” Marie surprisingly agrees.

“Yeah, so what? They’re hot. I’ve never seen two men as hot as they are. But they come into my life and shake the shit out of it. I had my life planned. I was going to have a nice, quiet, simple life. Then I had to overhear them saying that they loved me. Me! They love me! Why did they have to say that?” Their shocked gasps fill the room. “Yeah,” I shake my head. “How can they? They found out that I couldn’t have kids. How can they love me after that?”

“Honey,” Serenity says sadly. “Do you really think that makes you unlovable?”

“Fuck that,” Penny growls. “You are perfect the way you are. Any man that believes that not being able to have children makes you less than, is not much of a man.”

“They are meant for you. They don’t care about anything but loving you,” Harmony says.

“I agree,” Marie says softly. “Do you love them?”

I sit heavily back in the chair. “I didn’t think I did, but hearing them say that, I admitted it to myself. I tried to push them away. They just had to be amazing and give me orgasms,” I sigh, and Harmony giggles. “Why do they have to be so sexy?” I drain my drink and hold it out for more. “I don’t know how to be a mate. What if they regret their choice when I can’t give them kids?”

“Hon, they won’t. They don’t care. If you want kids, you can adopt. Think of how many kids are out there with no home. There are other ways to expand your family,” Serenity says. She lays her hand on her stomach. She’s not very big yet, but she has a little bump.

“I can help if you want to adopt. I went through the system and know the horrible things that could happen. I would have loved to have been invited into your family,” Harmony says quietly.

“That’s right. You have Cindy’s house. You take in foster kids,” Marie says.

“I’ve never thought about it,” I say. I wonder if the guys would be open to it.

“Ask your mates. We have a couple of kids that are wolves too.”

“Wolves,” I mutter. “I could be a wolf.”

“Wolves are cool,” Penny replies.

“At least it’s not a coyote,” Harmony says, sneering.

“I don’t understand the hatred for coyotes,” Penny says.

“Ryker doesn’t like them either. I have a valid reason for hating them. The woman that was fucking Ryker, a coyote, came after me and almost killed me,” Serenity informs the room.

“Holy shit, I didn’t know that,” Penny gasps.

“I’m sure there are good coyotes out there,” Harmony ponders.

I stare at them, eating popcorn and talking about coyotes. “Hello, can we stop talking about coyotes? A wolf. Me choosing to be one. I could still say no.” That gets their attention.

“Why would you say no?” Harmony narrows her eyes.
