“We all are,” Harmony says.

“What about this guy?” Blue holds up a file. “Randy? He was violent with his wife. It says he threw her into a wall.”

“Jesus,” James says.

“He is currently in jail. Marie did help put him there,” Quinn says.

“Do you think he would have paid someone on the outside to take her?” I ask. I look at his photo and commit it to memory.

“No, he was dead broke when he was convicted. I try to keep track of anyone that might cause issues in the future.”

“What is wrong with these men?” Ava asks, sneering.

“Everything,” I say. My demon agrees. “Quinn, I need you to separate the files. Take out the men that you have a location on.”

“Sure,” he replies.

We let him have control of the table. I step back and cross my arms. I’ve been shoving the thoughts of Marie’s beautiful face from my mind. I’ll go crazy if I imagine all the things that could be happening to her. I’m holding on by a thread. Anything could push me over the edge.

“Bash, can we do anything?” Harmony asks.

“No,” I say firmly. “Once I find the fucker, I won’t need any help.”

“Brother, if you think that we won’t be coming with you, you have lost it,” Ryker says as he comes back into the room with a cup that he hands to Serenity.

“Fuck you; I can do this by myself,” I scowl.

“I know you can, but you don’t have to,” he says.

“I can rescue my mate,” I grit out.

“We can help,” Ryker says.

“I don’t need the whole fucking crew getting in my way,” I shout.

“Are you ever going to accept that you are not alone?” he persists.

“None of this would be happening if I stayed alone. I didn’t want a mate. I didn’t need one. I was happy to stay in my corner by myself. But you wouldn’t leave me alone. You kept pulling me into the group. I’m an unfeeling asshole, and I like it that way. I regret the day that River convinced me to come to your office.” I rub my chest, needing the ache to go away. “I wouldn’t have met her, and she would be living her life, not in the hands of a sick man, going through things I don’t want to think about. She’s delicate and small. If she is alive, what will be the consequences of this sick fuck’s actions?”

“You will help her through it,” Ryker says.

“What if he rapes her? Huh? What then?” I ask harshly. The women in the room sucked in sharp breaths. “How will she get past that?”

“She will have you,” Ryker says, stepping close.

“What if I’m not enough?” I yell, throwing out my arms.

“You are, brother,” he says. “You are her mate. The one that is meant for her.”

“They made a mistake. I’m not the one for her,” I say weakly.

“You know that’s not true.” Ryker puts his hand on my shoulder, and I brush him off.

“Do I?” I ask. “Everyone thinks the universe is all-knowing, that they do everything for a reason. Where were they when my dad was beating the shit out of me, out of my mom? What about when he killed her? Do you think the universe was in control of that? No, humans do those things.” I ignore the shocked gasps around the room, keeping my eyes on Ryker. “A fucking human has her. He took the one good thing that has ever happened to me. The universe doesn’t want me to have anything good.”

“Bash,” Ryker says. He puts both hands on my shoulders, putting his forehead against mine. “That’s the reason they gave her to you. You deserve some happiness.”

I grab onto his arms and take a deep breath. The room is silent, and so is my demon. I controlled him, and he knew I needed to get that all out so we could get to work. I nod and back away. I’m not ashamed of my outburst, and judging by the sympathetic looks; I shouldn’t be.
